Job description

How do cells read time, not just concentration? Join us to explore signal duration in gene regulation — bridging statistical physics, stochastic processes, and real biology. During the development of an organism, gene regulation allows proteins to be expressed so that different cells can fulfil different functions. Historically it has been assumed that the concentration of a particular transcription factor protein presents a signal that regulates gene expression downstream. In early development it is often the duration of a signal that regulates gene expression. In this project we will explore how organisms can extract information from the duration of a signal theoretically, in close collaboration with experimental colleagues. The project requires an interest in developing statistical physics, stochastic processes, or information methods, a focus on numerics and analytics, an interest in modelling, and a genuine interest in engaging in the biological system and working closely with collaborators.

Job requirements

• Master’s in Physics, Computer Science, Nanobiology, Mathematics, Bioengineering or a related discipline.
• Interest in statistical physics, stochastic processes and data analysis methods.
• Interest in engaging and collaborating with experimental colleagues.

Conditions of employment

Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4‑year period of employment, normally in two contracts: an initial 1.5‑year contract with a progress assessment within 15 months, followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2.5 years assuming performance requirements are met.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, ranging from €3 059 to €3 881 gross per month, from the first to the fourth year, with 8 % holiday allowance and an end‑of‑year bonus of 8.3 %. Additional benefits include a customizable compensation package, discounts on health insurance, a monthly work‑costs contribution, and flexible work schedules.
