Your assignment
Over the past decennia, the medical industry has been moving from reusable equipment to disposable equipment, often made of or containing plastics. Reasons for this are the low cost of raw material for plastics in combination with the easy obtainable sterility of plastic products and globalisation, making reusable sterile products more difficult to track, collect, and reuse. Making low-cost plastic products and selling them with a high throughput has become more financially attractive.
The main topic you will be investigating is: How can Demcon reduce the environmental impact of products containing plastic parts. Changing the current disposable system can be very challenge due to financial disadvantage, regulations or lack of incentive. An easier way to convert to a sustainable system can be by means of a more accessible intermediate solution, while keeping the current workflow intact to a large extent. One way of approaching this intermediate solution is to divert from using virgin fossil-based plastics and move towards a more sustainable alternative. For example, using plastics made of renewable resources or using recycled plastics. This brings about new challenges such as bio-based material characteristics, material degradation over product lifetime, material purity or increased production cost.
