Applying is possible until: 27 maart 2026

We are looking for an enthusiastic and decisive colleague who can strengthen research, education, and leadership in the field of Astronomy & Society. The ideal candidate moves effortlessly between academic research and social impact and actively contributes to the visibility of the Leiden Observatory. This position is 50/50 shared between Leiden Observatory (STRW) and the department Science Communication and Society (SCS) at the Institute of Biology (IBL).

Where you will work

The mission of the research department Science Communication and Society is to improve the interaction between science and society through understanding how science communication works. We believe better science communication can improve our society and engage many different groups with science, also improving science. The department already has experience with interdisciplinary research groups, such as the Biodiversity and Society and Quantum and Society research groups.

Leiden Observatory is the astronomical institute of the Faculty of Science at Leiden University. With a rich history and a leading role in international astronomy, we offer a dynamic work environment where cutting‑edge research and top‑level education come together. Our academic programs include a Bachelor and Master degree, complemented by a renowned PhD program. Together with over 180 dedicated staff members we are committed to academic innovation and fostering a close‑knit, inclusive community where everyone feels welcome and valued.

With over 1,300 staff members and nearly 4,000 students, the faculty has experienced significant growth and is situated in the heart of the Leiden Bio Science Park—one of Europe’s largest science hubs, fostering close interaction between academia and industry. What you will do
