Job description

First, the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry/Psychology has been collecting neuroimaging data in the Generation R Study, a population-based birth cohort, since 2008. Second, the Departments of Epidemiology and Radiology have been collecting neuroimaging data in the Rotterdam Study, a longitudinal cohort of aging, since 2005. Between the two projects, over 30 researchers are actively using (neuro) imaging data from more than 20,000 scan sessions.

You will be responsible for helping researchers on the team organize imaging data (incoming data quality/integrity control, maintenance/organization/administration of imaging databases), checking and cleaning the data, data provenance, and distributing data to researchers and other data manager colleagues within the different departments. Time will be split between the Generation R Study (Child Psychiatry, 40%) and the Rotterdam Study (Radiology, 40%). Further, a portion of your time will be spent working with the Biomedical Imaging Group Rotterdam (BIGR) to harmonize efforts across the different studies to optimize the management of data and increase efficiency, including implementation and integration of software and image analysis pipelines (20% of the candidate’s time).

Work environment

The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry/Psychology (CAPP) is the only independent department for child and adolescent psychiatry and psychology in the Netherlands that is integrated within a university medical center. Research in the Department of CAPP focuses on general population samples and clinical epidemiology (in populations at risk for severe mental illness, psychiatrically ill children and adolescence as well as somatically ill youth with psychiatric or psychological problems). The department is leading in Europe as far as standardized diagnostic assessment procedures are concerned and is internationally one of the strongest centers conducting etiological epidemiological research in the field of child psychopathology. The department of CAPP brings together clinical services, research, education and training to offer care and treatment, based upon reliable research evidence. The department of CAPP has extensive collaborations with the department of Neuroscience, Clinical Genetics, Epidemiology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Neurology, and Radiology.

The Department of Radiology & Nuclear Medicine is the largest department of Radiology in the Netherlands and one of the largest in Europe. Our department is dedicated to high quality patient care, education, and research. Concerning research, the department is known for its forefront research and its state-of-the-art facilities.

The Biomedical Imaging Group Rotterdam (BIGR) is part of the Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. BIGR develops and validates novel image analysis techniques for biomedical applications and is internationally at the forefront of quantitative medical image analysis. We offer a dynamic, challenging, and cooperative research environment. We have excellent access to large-scale imaging studies (clinical, epidemiological, and biological) and we collaborate closely with clinical and epidemiological experts from different departments within the Erasmus MC.

Qualifications and skills
  • You must have a minimum of an MSc degree in Computer Science, Psychology, Neuroscience, Engineering, or Informatics.
  • You must be familiar with at least 1 programming language (e.g., python, Matlab, Bash) and also willing to learn Python.
  • You have experience with Linux operating systems.
  • You must possess good written and verbal communication skills in English, you are able to take initiative, work well both as a team player and independently, and have a strong attention to detail.
  • Preferred is that you have previous data management experience with interest in informatics and in imaging data science.

Terms of employment

You will receive a temporary position of 1 year, with a 6 month trial period. Depending on funding and the candidate’s performance, the position has potential for extension. The gross monthly salary amounts a maximum of € 3.604,- (scale 8), depending on your level of education and relevant experience and based on a full-time working week of 36 hours. In the yearly salary a extra summer vacation salary and end of year bonus will be added. The terms of employment are according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Dutch University Medical Centers (CAO UMC).
