How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

Job description

Mid-weight Product Designer (Contract)

Rate: circa £300–£375 per day, outside IR35

Length: 3 months initially, likely to extend

Location: Bristol 2 days on site (Tuesday and Wednesday), remote the rest

Start: ASAP, ideally early August

The role

Our client runs a well-established consumer mobile app with a large UK user base. They're bringing in a mid-weight product designer for 3 months to work on a defined roadmap of app features while their principal designer steps up to cover the wider team.

You'd sit in the app squad alongside two other product designers (one junior, one mid) and a hands-off product manager who's been with the business a decade. The designers lead their own work here. You get the opportunity and the business context, then you go away, shape it, test it, and bring it back to refine with the PM and the React developers.

It's a hands-on doing role. The roadmap is already set, so they want someone happy running the work end to end with light direction, focused on delivery rather than owning strategy or directing the team.

What you'd work on

  • Core feature enhancements. Building on existing app functionality and new data feeds to give people more reason to come back.
  • Personalisation and location-based features. Surfacing the right thing at the right moment based on context.
  • Login, identity and account management. The everyday app plumbing: sign-in, policies, account settings.
  • A couple of further projects that'll land during the contract.

The measure of success is stickiness and churn. If a feature gives someone a reason to open the app and dig in, it's working.

What you'd own

You run the work from problem to design. That means:

  • Framing the problem properly before you design
  • Deciding the right test to prove or disprove your hypothesis, then setting up moderated or unmoderated studies (they use usertesting.com and can source their own members)
  • Shaping designs that fit the business need
  • Breaking work down sensibly, from MVP through to the more desirable, lovable version, and thinking through how it actually gets built

Who we're after

A strong mid-weight product designer. Roughly where a lead sits about 7 years back: fully capable in the craft, comfortable working solo, but focused on the doing rather than leading teams or owning roadmaps.

You'll be a fit if:

  • Your portfolio shows consumer mobile app work (this ships to iOS and Android via React, so no native design needed)
  • You think functionally and technically. How does this get built, what are the components, how does it break down. The heavy creative work is covered by others in the squad; this role is about how it works.
  • You can run user testing yourself and know which test answers which question
  • You're comfortable in Figma (your own licence is a bonus)

Nice to have: any exposure to using AI tools for research and analysis. The team leans on Claude for writing user studies and analysing data, so there's a chance to pick that up.

No specific sector knowledge required.
