SSB-Delta is a multi-disciplinary project to assess the technical and functional lifetime of the Storm Surge Barriers (SSB)'s and to develop barrier- and delta adaptation pathways as a basis for adaptive decision-making. The project is a collaboration with Universities (TU Delft, Utrecht, Rotterdam) Universities of Applied Sciences (Rotterdam, Vlissingen), Technological institutes (Deltares, TNO) and stakeholders (governmental organisations and industry). The project includes 9 new positions covering a variety of topics. The project will be embedded in ongoing research in the Netherlands and Texas, and strongly linked to international networks like I-STORM. This position will be hosted by the Hydraulic Engineering Department, a department that stood at the basis of the design of the storm surge barriers and coastal management of the Netherlands. We combine expertise on hydraulic structures as well as on estuarine system dynamics, using numerical models, probabilistic methods, Machine Learning techniques, field measurements, etc.
In this PhD project (WP4.2), you will explore the effects of the operation strategy and technical functioning of storm surge barriers on system-wide flood risk under different future Delta scenarios (as developed within other SSB-Delta projects). You will first develop a method to assess future flood risk in a system protected by storm surge barriers. We anticipate a meta-model, based on outcomes of other work packages combined with several existing models. This requires a sound understanding of storm surge barrier protected systems. Therefore you need to identify what are the key mechanisms that may lead to flood related damage and to analyse how these mechanisms and their mutual relations are most effectively combined in the meta-model to be developed. Next, you will explore together with other work packages in several case studies how this model can optimally support the adaptive delta management of systems protected by storm surge barriers.
We expect rich collaborations with other PhD candidates, postdocs and staff in the consortium, as well as with the stakeholders (Rijkswaterstaat, water boards, companies, etc). For example, you will interact with hydraulic engineering PhD candidates that study the barrier technical performance and failure probabilities, with social science PhD candidates that study the acceptance of risk, and many more.
Job requirements
We are seeking a candidate with:
- A MSc degree in Hydraulic Engineering, Water Management, Geography, Earth system science or related discipline.
- An excellent ability to think conceptually and quantitatively.
- An excellent ability to write and communicate in English.
- An intrinsic motivation to cooperate in a larger project.
- Significant experience with a coding language commonly used in engineering (e.g., Fortran, Matlab, Python).
- Prior knowledge of probabilistics and risk.
- Good organisation skills.
- Affinity with engineering practice.
- Being able to read Dutch is a strong preference.

Conditions of employment
Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1,5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2,5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.
Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2901 per month in the first year to €3707 in the fourth year.
