About the Role

As Senior Software Engineer you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining our backend systems and ensuring their scalability, reliability, and performance. By demonstrating expertise in code fluency, software design, and architecture design you will serve as technical lead for various projects. The role involves fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation, mentoring, and coaching junior engineers and contributing to hiring processes. You will work in cross-functional teams with other departments such as Product or Operations to meet our organizational goals.

This means that you will be responsible for:

• Design & Delivery: You will design and deliver robust, scalable, and secure solutions and act as technical lead. It is your job to define and deliver well-scoped milestones for projects in collaboration with our Product Managers

• Optimize Performance: Ensure high performance and responsiveness of applications, identifying bottlenecks and providing solutions. By adapting new technologies and/or best practices you continuously improve the quality of our applications

• Product Expertise and Customer Impact: Actively consider customer needs and leverage input from product stakeholders to determine the right technical solutions. Ensure work has the greatest customer impact and aligns with business and team goals

• Collaboration: Work closely with other Engineers, Product Managers, and other stakeholders to define technical requirements and ensure alignment with business objectives.

• Mentorship: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, fostering a culture of learning and growth within the Tech team

You will be working within the Technology department. Tech exists out of 15 engineers divided over 3 teams. You will report to Luc Klaassen, our Head of Engineering.

What do you need to be successful?

We think you need to following qualities for the role:

• Education: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field

• Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in software development, with a proven track record of delivering high-quality software

• Technical Skills:

  • Kotlin and/or Java, Typescript and Vue

  • Google Cloud Platform, Kubernetes, Docker

  • CI/CD: Gitlab Pipelines and Jenkins

  • Databases: PostgreSQL and/or MySQL

  • Build tools: Gradle and/or Maven

• Project leadership: Strong leadership skills with the ability to serve as a technical lead for projects

• Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders

Creating the labor market of the future starts with us. We spend a lot of time and attention on our internal organization. You will work in a young and ambitious team. The average age at Maqqie is 33 years. We work hard together but also laugh a lot. We focus on your growth and development. Therefore, from day one, you will have the freedom to do your thing. At the beginning of 2024, we moved to the centre of Rotterdam. Our office is located on the Coolsingel opposite the City Hall and is only 5 minutes from Rotterdam Central. You can join the group lunch, and there are plenty of dining and drinking options around the office. We are also a hybrid company. There are possibilities to work from the office, home, or temporarily from abroad.

In 2025, we aim to make the contracting and payment of employees even easier. All laws, regulations, collective agreements, and wishes around employment make the deployment and payment of employees incredibly complex. At Maqqie, we are making this more efficient step by step, and where possible, we automate it. By the end of this year, we want to be the payment engine of the labor market: providing every type of employee (employee, freelancer, temporary worker) with a contract, hours registration, support, and payment.
