What’s the role?

The role of the Exposure Scientist is to provide expert exposure science advice including innovative risk management solutions, and assessment of safer alternative products and operational approaches for health and environmental hazards. Drive development of safe and sustainable products and processes, and act as a partner in projects and technology development. Influence internal and external stakeholders. Support the wider Product Safety organization by delivering the exposure content (human and environmental exposures) of the risk assessment processes.

Other Accountabilities:

• Participation in and monitoring and advocacy of scientific developments related to human and environmental exposure to chemicals, including exposure to complex mixtures, biomarkers of effect, defining conditions of safe use and advanced exposure models
• Support scientific work including regulatory compliance delivery for Shell products and processes, working directly with the businesses and through trade associations
• Represent the company in industrial and scientific fora as expert in exposure science
• Prepare regulatory submissions using own professional judgement in accordance with laid down procedures
• Ensure exposure testing is undertaken in accordance with company processes and procedures
• Deliver exposure assessments and standard human health risk assessments
• Liaise with other exposure scientists or product stewards to determine appropriate risk management strategies and support product stewardship and the risk management measures communication process
• Review justification documents and other information on selected company products to meet regulatory requirements required by national or regional regulations
• Working environment characterised by high degrees of complexity and ambiguity with fixed deadlines.
• Developing knowledge of company products/operations and applying exposure science principles to solve problems and add business value.
• Developing influencing skills within industry consortia to achieve business goals

What we need from you

• MSc in Exposure Science, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental sciences, Ecotoxicology, Toxicology, Epidemiology, Risk assessment or equivalent
• Awareness of related disciplines such as Toxicology, Ecotoxicology, and Epidemiology
• PhD in Exposure Science is a benefit
• Eligible for registration under an international scheme for exposure scientists
• Ability to use computer models for exposure assessment applications, which may include CHESAR, EUSES, ART, Consexpo and others
• Experience in an industrial setting is a benefit
• Ability to seek, test and advice innovation opportunities for assessment of exposure to health hazards
• Experience with global chemicals regulations (including EU REACH and TSCA) and other HSE regulatory requirements is preferred.
• Strong aptitude for Learner Mindset
• Ability to work independently to deliver results and to work in multidisciplinary teams
• Ability to develop and express ideas and opinions concisely
• Ability to engage and effectively communicate at all levels inside and outside Shell and within different cultural settings
• Strong interpersonal skills, ability to challenge and ability to build internal and external relationships based on trust and to integrate across multiple functions
• Fluency in English
