Postdoc position on Multi-Material 3D Printing

Job description

The Materializing Futures research group at TU Delft is looking for a post-doctoral researcher in the field of Multi-Material Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing). The group aims at developing theories, tools, and methods to empower future designers in understanding and designing with emerging material and fabrication technologies in the interest of the planet and society. Our research activities are organised under three interconnected pillars: Materials, Fabrication, and Computational Design.

The postdoc candidate will work on investigating new material structures and material combinations for Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) 3D printing. The aim is to provide new design opportunities, as well as proper processing for recycling. This research will address the following challenges of FDM systems that are capable of processing multiple materials in one part.

1) We need to understand how the printing process and printed (micro)structure influences the bonding of the multiple materials.

2) The end of life should be considered: which materials can be processed well together for recycling and how can the printed structures facilitate adequate separation of the plastics?

Within these topics, the candidate has the freedom to define a focus. The candidate has the opportunity to cooperate with an established 3D printing company and to mentor graduate students working on related topics.


The candidate is in possession of a doctoral degree in preferably design, mechanical engineering, or material science. The candidate should have a holistic view on materials and have affinity with digital manufacturing. Next to having a good understanding of design, 3D printing technologies, material testing, and simulation, the candidate should be interested in disseminating the research results with the industry and designers. An open personality and good communication skills are required.
