This postdoc position in computational biology is available within the Convergence project titled “Single-cell discovery of molecular mechanisms and biomarkers for targeted proton therapy”.
Proton therapy is thought to be safer and more effective than conventional radiation therapy, because a proton beam can be directed more precisely for less impact on surrounding tissues. The treatment is therefore indicated for tumors located near sensitive organs, such as the eye, brain, and central nervous system. The effects of proton therapy at the molecular level as well as the mechanisms driving resistance to this treatment remain poorly understood.
The Gonçalves lab at the TU Delft is looking for a self-motivated and independent postdoc to work in a flagship multidisciplinary project in collaboration with the Chien lab at the Erasmus Medical Center. The project aims to gain a better understanding of molecular mechanisms driving (single-cell) heterogeneity in response to proton therapy in cancer. This unique research opportunity is also made possible by the close proximity to one of the two proton therapy centers in the Netherlands: the HollandPTC in Delft.
The focus of this postdoc position at the TU Delft will be to design computational methods and build models to predict response and identify molecular and image biomarkers of single-cell response and resistance to treatment. The work will involve close collaboration with an experimental postdoc at Erasmus MC, who will use advanced imaging and single-cell sequencing technologies to characterize cell cultures derived from patient biopsies before and after therapy.

Functie eisen

The successful postdoc candidate should have a solid background in Computer Science or equivalent, with knowledge of algorithmics, statistical data analysis and modeling, and machine learning. Additionally, a PhD in bioinformatics or related, and substantial research experience with bioinformatics tools for processing and analysis of high-throughput molecular data is preferred. The position requires excellent command of the English language, both spoken and written. In addition, we are looking for creativity, critical thinking, rigour, independence, and good communication skills. The position is moderately applied, there is room for innovation and development of new ideas.

The candidate will work in a highly multidisciplinary environment, and interact with a diverse group of faculty in Computer Science, Pattern Recognition, Bioinformatics, Biomedical and Molecular Biology. The project will also enable collaboration with other leading laboratories at the Erasmus MC, the TU Delft, and the Oncode Institute.


The gross monthly salary ranges from € 3.389 to € 4.274 depending on your level of education and relevant experience and based on a full-time workweek. The terms of employment are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreements of the participating institutes.
