The Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering (3mE) Faculty trains committed engineering students, young researchers, PhD candidates and post-doctoral researchers in groundbreaking scientific research in the fields of mechanical, maritime and materials engineering. 3mE is the epitome of a dynamic, innovative faculty, with a European scope that contributes demonstrable economic and social benefits. Within 3mE, the vision of the department of Maritime and Transport Technology is to “contribute to solving global challenges by educating new generations of socially responsible engineers and expanding the frontiers of the maritime and transport engineering sciences.

The Ship Design, Production & Operation (SDPO) research group is part of the Department of Maritime and Transport Technology within the Faculty of 3mE. SDPO covers research related to design, engineering, production, repair and operation of ships and other floating marine objects including their machinery and electric equipment.

Functie omschrijving

The SDPO research group is seeking a tenure track assistant or associate professor in one or more of the areas related to:

  • Maritime economic modelling

  • Advanced (statistical) modelling of maritime operations

  • Shipping Management

It is the intention that the research areas of the candidate are applied to topics relevant for the Netherlands and broader European Union maritime industry. These interests include: specialized and value added complex vessels, superyachts, unmanned and autonomous ships, inland ships and dealing with the maritime energy transition. It is also expected that the candidate’s experience and research line will complement and contribute to at least one of the existing research themes within the broader department of Maritime and Transport Technology:

  • Safe, autonomous, and complex ships

  • Coordinated multi-machine transport and logistics

  • Sustainable drive and energy systems

  • Reliable large floating systems

Responsibilities of the tenure track position include publication of peer-reviewed journal papers and acquisition of research funding. The candidate should be able to acquire funding for these projects through cooperation with the private sector, government and/or EU or Dutch national projects and research grants. A good network in academia, the private sector, government and research institutes is relevant. Practical experience within the maritime industry will be valued, as well as experience in teaching academic courses and supervising graduation research projects.

Another important responsibility is the development and teaching of one or more BSc/MSc courses and (co-)supervision of BSc/MSc students, project teams, design projects and PhD candidates. An additional portion of the position’s responsibilities is devoted to management activities such as participation in department and faculty committees.

Functie eisen

The candidate for the position should:

  • Have obtained a PhD from an internationally recognized institution in naval architecture, ship design, maritime economics, maritime logistics or closely related fields;

  • Have a clear track record of high-end research as evidenced in part via their peer-reviewed publication record;

  • Demonstrate the potential to initiate, acquire, execute, and coordinate research projects. This includes a vision on how to develop a new, independent research line that is complementary to current research in the SDPO section;

  • Have a clear vision on modern engineering education. The candidate can inspire students and develop their passion for and knowledge of ship design, production, and operations. This includes the capability to define thesis topics and supervise bachelor, MSc, and PhD students;

  • Be motivated and have the ability to contribute to organizational tasks of the department such as outreach and valorization

  • Be proficient in English, and, for foreign candidates, the willingness to learn the Dutch language;

  • Have experience with the academic environment and are aware of inclusiveness values of TU Delft.


At the start of the tenure-track you will be appointed as an Assistant or Associate Professor for the duration of six years. Section leader, the leader of the department and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills. You will receive formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively at the end of the tenure track, you will be appointed in a permanent Assistant or Associate Professor position.
