The Faculty of Applied Sciences is the largest faculty of TU Delft with around 550 scientists, a support staff of 250 and 1,800 students. The faculty conducts fundamental, application-oriented research and offers scientific education at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels.
The Department of Bionanoscience (www.bn.tudelft.nl) is part of the Faculty of Applied Sciences at Delft University of Technology and part of the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience Delft (http://kavli.tudelft.nl/).
The Department was established in 2010 and currently consists of 16 research groups, each headed by a faculty member with postdocs, PhD students and technicians, as well as general support staff (total of 160 fte). The Department of Bionanoscience performs pioneering, fundamental research at the interface between physics and biology. Research is aimed at a quantitative, mechanistic understanding of how interactions at the nanoscale lead to biological function or disease at the cellular scale.
The department offers excellent general facilities, including a central optical microscopy facility, a cryo-EM facility, extensive general cell biology and biochemistry facilities, and a large cleanroom facility, the Kavli Nanolab Delft. The Department strives for a collegial, nourishing, and inclusive environment. Since 2012, together with the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Department is co-responsible for a Bachelor and Master program in Nanobiology, which provides a thorough combined training in biology and physics. We invite applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position from outstanding early-career scientists interested in biology at the smallest scales. Successful candidates are expected to develop a cutting edge experimental and/or theoretical/computational research program. In addition, we expect our new colleague to enthusiastically teach and help develop courses in our BSc and MSc programs.
We welcome applications in the entire range from nanophysics and biochemistry to synthetic- and cell biology. Successful candidates are also expected to interact synergistically with existing research groups. Current research activities include eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell biology, virology, biophysics, synthetic biology, synthetic cells and bionanotechnology.
Successful applicants can expect a competitive start-up package for their research program, which they should further expand by attracting external research funding. Specialized staff members are available at TU Delft to support tenure-track assistant professors in building and strengthening their own research programs and to provide administrative support. At the start of the Tenure Track you will be appointed as Assistant Professor for the duration of six years. The Department Chair will agree with you upon expected performance and (soft) skills. You will receive formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively and are on track at the end of the Tenure Track, you will be appointed in a permanent Associate Professor position.
