Our research feeds into our educational programmes and covers societal challenges such as climate change, energy transition, resource depletion, urbanisation and the availability of clean water, conducted in close cooperation with a wide range of research institutions. CEG is convinced that Open Science helps to achieve our goals and supports its scientists in integrating Open Science in their research practice. The Faculty of CEG comprises 28 research groups in the following seven departments: Materials Mechanics Management & Design, Engineering Structures, Geoscience and Engineering, Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Transport & Planning, Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management.

Functie omschrijving

In many disciplines within Civil Engineering and Geosciences, scientific progress depends more and more on computational innovations and big data analysis. This is especially true to gain fundamental insights and breakthroughs in the domains of water management, geodesy, atmospheric remote sensing, engineering structures and geosciences. The effective use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in these fields has accelerated. Will you contribute to this development with a compelling research vision on AI in these research areas?

You will strengthen our research and education in civil engineering, environmental engineering, chemical engineering, geo-engineering and geosciences, computer science or a related field as an Assistant Professor in a tenure track. With a strong background in one of these themes and proven experience in AI, you will develop a new research line in one of our Departments that leverages the power of AI to address relevant scientific or engineering challenges.

Your research line or programme could fit within the following, non-exclusive, areas, AI for:

  • Digital Design of Futuristic Engineering Structures

  • Water Management

  • Weather and Climate

  • Geodesy

  • Geosciences

The Faculty CEG has the ambition to strengthen its position in AI education as well, since an understanding of the principles and applications of modern data science and AI is essential for new generations of civil and geoscience -engineers. It is anticipated that all bachelor and master programmes will incorporate an AI-component in the near future. You will take the lead in developing the AI components of these educational programmes. This requires setting up courses that add synergistically to the existing learning lines, as well as coordinating a coherent vision on AI education in civil engineering, engineering structures, environmental engineering, remote sensing, water management and geosciences, taking also into account embedding your contributions in the broader scope of AI in the engineering sciences. It is expected of the candidate to propose a vision on education in AI as well, considering the context described above.

The faculty focus on artificial intelligence, data and digitalisation coincides with a university wide program that supports the advance of these disciplines, which are becoming increasingly important to address major scientific and societal challenges. TU Delft is recruiting 16 talented researchers, who will have the opportunity to push the boundaries of science by using AI. Your drive is to solve research questions which arise from scientific and societal challenges and contribute to the development and execution of domain specific education. You will be a member of the thriving Artificial Intelligence community within TU Delft that fosters cross-fertilization between talents with different expertise and disciplines. The TU Delft AI Labs (DAI-Labs) are a perfect example how different disciplines work together in the field of AI.

You are expected to actively pursue collaboration within TU Delft with other AI experts, either through existing DAI Labs, or by setting up a new DAI Lab in the coming years. The faculty will help you in this matchmaking process with potential junior research partners in other faculties to establish a DAI-lab with a clear focus on research, education, and societal value. You are expected to propose a clear and appealing vision on such cooperation that would fit with your profile.

  • PhD in civil, geo-, environmental engineering or any other relevant discipline

  • Ambitious vision on the development of your own research programme using AI

  • Ability to work with large amount of data and AI and deliver high quality research as evidenced in the publications record.

  • An excellent academic track record reflected by publications in leading international journals.

  • Experience with teaching and mentoring is considered an advantage.

  • The ability to work in a team and inspire others, take initiative, be results oriented.

  • Good communication skills in verbal and written English.


At the start of the tenure-track, you will be appointed as Assistant Professor for the duration of six years. Section leader, department leaders and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills. You will receive a start-up package and formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively at the end of the tenure track, you will be appointed in a permanent Assistant Professor position.
