The Faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences (CEG) is committed to outstanding international research and education in the field of civil engineering, applied earth sciences, traffic and transport, water technology, and delta technology. Our research feeds into our educational programmes and covers societal challenges such as climate change, energy transition, resource depletion, urbanisation and the availability of clean water, conducted in close cooperation with a wide range of research institutions. CEG is convinced that Open Science helps to achieve our goals and supports its scientists in integrating Open Science in their research practice. The Faculty of CEG comprises 28 research groups in the following seven departments: Materials Mechanics Management & Design, Engineering Structures, Geoscience and Engineering, Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Transport & Planning, Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management.

Functie omschrijving

The TU Delft is a world leader in the field of hydraulic engineering. We are looking for an enthusiastic Assistant Professor who would like to become our new colleague in the research group Offshore Engineering.
As assistant professor you will conduct high quality, internationally leading research in the field of fluid-structure interaction focusing on the development, design and testing of the energy converters that use the hydropower as input. The emphasis of the research will be placed on the conversion of ocean energy and hydropower in general. It is desirable that you have good knowledge of the converters of the other renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar energy, and have ideas as to how to integrate those with the hydropower converters, especially in the offshore environment.
The tenure track includes publishing in peer reviewed journals, acquiring funding for research (industry, EU and the National Science Foundation) and contributing to BSc and MSc courses. You will also (co-) supervise PhD and MSc students. Part of the positions’ responsibilities is devoted to management activities such as participation in department and faculty committees.

The Department of Hydraulic Engineering is mainly concerned with major surface waters such as rivers, estuaries and seas. The focus is on understanding, designing and implementing human interventions in the natural environment for the discharge of water, for protection against water for transport over water and for building in water. Within the department, the Offshore Engineering section provides mechanics-based understanding, tools and solutions to offshore engineering challenges. The focus of the research is placed on the integral modelling and design of offshore structures under various loads such as wind, waves, currents and ice. Besides Offshore Engineering, the department consists of the following sections: Coastal Engineering; Rivers, Ports, Waterways and Dredging Engineering; Environmental Fluid Mechanics, and Hydraulic Structures and Flood Risk.

The Offshore Engineering Section conducts applied and fundamental research of value to the offshore engineering community and society as a whole. Alongside the research activities, the group is strongly involved in education within the Offshore and Dredging Engineering interfaculty curriculum. Both the research and education are carried out in close cooperation with the energy-oriented companies focused on offshore engineering developments.

Functie eisen

We seek a colleague who has the dedication to pursue a career in academia. You hold a PhD or equivalent degree either in Civil Engineering or Marine Energy; related subject areas will also be considered. You have an ambitious vision of the rapid and succcesful development of the renewable energy sector, addressing European targets. It is strongly desirable that you are familiar with the renewable energy resource assessments, energy modelling and energy economics and are fluent in data analysis. You have proven skills in writing research proposals, acquiring funding, and successfully managing projects. It is desirable that you have proven ability to engage with external stakeholders and develop public-private collaboration.
You have a scientific track record and proven ability to deliver high quality research as evidenced by your publications record. You aim to establish your own research line and build up your own research group. You possess a good understanding of the higher education environment including diversity and inclusion values. You can, through your research, personality and teaching qualities, inspire co-workers and students alike.
It is very important that you like to work in a cooperative and amicable environment and possess good organisational and communication skills.
Finally, must be proficient in spoken and written English.


A tenure-track position is offered for six years. In the fifth year we’ll decide if you will be offered a permanent faculty position, based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment. We expect that you have the potential to grow towards an Associate Professor and/or Full Professor role in the future.

Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. We expect you to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within three years if you have less than five years of teaching experience. This is provided by the TU Delft UTQ programme.
TU Delft sets high standards for the English competency of the teaching staff. The TU Delft offers training to improve English competency. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer courses to learn the Dutch language within three years.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (salary indication: €3746-€5826). Salary will be based on age, work experience and date of PhD. The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, a discount on health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.
