How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.

Driver Trainer

Benefits:

Salary: £33,699- £38,220 per annum, Grade 4

Hours: Full Time - 37 hours per week

Location – Service Headquarters, Calcot, Reading

About the role:

We are seeking a self-motivated, engaging, and safety‑focused individual to join our team as a Driver Trainer within the Fire and Rescue Service. You will have experience delivering high ‑ quality driver training and coaching, ideally within an emergency services or high‑risk environment. You will be confident in helping others develop the skills they need to operate safely and effectively.

To meet the Emergency Response Driving Fire Standard, this role includes the requirement to deliver courses in night-time and low-visibility conditions to simulate real-world emergency conditions. A relevant payment will be available for any staff working over 37 hours in order to deliver this standard.

About you:

You will work effectively and collaboratively with others and bring a calm, solutions‑focused approach when supporting colleagues across the Service.

You will lead by example, consistently displaying professionalism, patience, and strong communication skills. Your ability to adapt your teaching style, provide constructive feedback, and promote safe driving behaviours will be central to your success in this role.

You will also have proven experience in delivering effective driver training or assessment, along with the confidence to support others in developing safe, high‑quality driving skills.

Specifically, we are seeking individuals who are passionate about developing others, committed to promoting safe driving practices, and confident in delivering clear, high‑quality training in a supportive and professional manner.

The key focus of this role (Key Responsibilities and Deliverables) is:

Delivering high‑quality driver training, coaching, and assessments to ensure colleagues develop safe and effective driving skills.

Supporting operational staff in maintaining the standards required for emergency response and specialist vehicle handling.

Promoting safe driving behaviours across the organisation through clear instruction, constructive feedback, and positive role modelling.

Maintaining accurate training records, assessments, and compliance documentation in line with Service policy.

Contributing to continuous improvement by reviewing training methods, identifying development needs, and supporting Service‑wide initiatives.

Working collaboratively with teams and stations across RBFRS to ensure consistent, high‑quality driver training provision.

Key role requirements (knowledge, skills and experience):

Awareness and understanding of assessing and best practice preferably within an operational or high‑risk driving environment.

Strong knowledge of road safety, relevant legislation, and best‑practice driving standards.

Ability to deliver clear, structured instruction and provide constructive feedback to support learner development.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to adapt your approach to different learning styles.

A calm, professional, safety‑focused mindset with the ability to role‑model high standards of driving behavior.

Able to work independently and unsupervised.

Stage Two: If shortlisted for interview: you will be required to complete a role – based task. Full details of the task have been provided below in advance to allow sufficient time for preparation.

The role‑based task will involve researching Roadcraft and delivering a PowerPoint presentation with a particular focus on the System of Vehicle Control. If shortlisted, you will be required to present this to the recruitment panel as part of your interview.

The presentation should be no longer than 15 minutes in duration.

Stage Three: Driving Assessment (subject to availability)

Appointment is conditional upon undertaking Standard Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Rechecks will be required in line with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and Recruitment of Ex-Offenders Policy.
