How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.

POSITION PURPOSE


The post holder in Cinematography & Film Production will contribute to the design, development, and delivery of teaching, learning, and assessment across the Film & Media Production programme and related disciplines within the School of Communications & Creative Industries.

The post holder will bring substantial professional practice as a Director of Photography (DP) or Cinematographer and will play a key role in preparing students for careers in contemporary screen industries. The position focuses on the delivery of cinematography and film production education while contributing to broader media production teaching across interdisciplinary programmes where appropriate.


Candidates with professional experience as both a Director of Photography and Director are particularly encouraged to apply. The programme values practitioners who understand the close relationship between performance, blocking, camera placement, coverage and visual storytelling, and who can support students in developing both technical and directorial decision making.

The post holder will ensure the effective delivery of modules in accordance with University strategies, policies, and quality assurance requirements. The role also includes scholarship, industry engagement, curriculum development, student support, and contribution to the wider activities and reputation of the School and University.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES


Teaching & Learning


  • Lead the delivery of cinematography modules across the programme and contribute to other film and media production modules as required.
  • Teach on set practice across multiple production contexts: narrative fiction, documentary, TVC and commercial production, and VFX-integrated shoots (including planning for green screen, set extensions, and compositing pipelines).
  • Plan, deliver, and assess undergraduate modules across film and media production, focusing on but not limited to cinematography.
  • Contribute to the delivery of media production related modules within the Professional Communications programme.
  • Design and facilitate practical workshops, studio sessions, and location-based productions that reflect current industry standards.
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback on student work in line with BUV’s assessment policies.
  • Supervise and mentor student projects, short films, documentary productions, and commercial briefs.
  • Support student learning through office hours, tutorials, and one-to-one guidance.


Curriculum & Programme Development


  • Contribute to the development, review, and continuous improvement of programme curricula in response to industry developments and quality assurance requirements.
  • Help maintain and develop industry standard facilities, equipment, and workflows in alignment with the needs of both the Film & Media Production and Professional Communications programmes.
  • Participate in programme committees, external examiner processes, and academic review activities.


Research, Professional Practice & Scholarship


  • Maintain and develop active professional practice and/or applied research profile relevant to the field.
  • Stay current with developments in the screen industries including evolving VFX workflows, virtual production, and shifts in the commercial production landscape.
  • Contribute to the professional reputation of the programme through industry engagement, project work, or other scholarly and creative activities.
  • Conduct individual research or work on collaborative research projects.
  • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research.
  • Make presentations at conferences and other similar events.


Wider Institutional Contribution


  • Participate actively in departmental and institutional meetings, working groups, and committees.
  • Support student recruitment activities, including open days, auditions, and portfolio reviews.
  • Act as a personal tutor for a cohort of students, supporting their academic and professional development.
  • Contribute to the internationalisation agenda of BUV and support the development of industry partnerships and placement opportunities.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties as requested by the Programme Leader or Head of School.


Pastoral care


  • Be responsible for pastoral care of students within a specified area.
  • Act as personal tutor, giving first-line support and mentoring to students.
  • Appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances.
  • Use listening, interpersonal and pastoral care skills to deal with sensitive issues concerning students and provide support.
  • Refer students as appropriate to services providing further support.


KEY SELECTION CRITERIA


Qualifications


  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Film Production, Cinematography, Media Production, or a closely related discipline from an internationally recognized institution – Essential
  • A PhD or equivalent doctoral qualification in a relevant discipline – Desirable
  • Higher Education teaching qualification (e.g., PGCHE, PGCertHE, or equivalent) – Desirable
  • Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) or international equivalent – Desirable


Professional Experience — Essential


  • A demonstrable professional track record as a Director of Photography (DP) or Cinematographer, evidenced by a showreel and production credits across at least two of the following contexts: narrative fiction, documentary, TVC/commercial, or VFX-integrated production.
  • Technical mastery of professional camera systems, lenses, filters, and exposure; lighting design etc. For both dramatic and commercial work; and the visual language of cinematography as it serves story.
  • Practical, on set experience with VFX-integrated cinematography workflows including designing and executing photography for visual effects post production pipelines.
  • Professional experience in TVC, commercial, or branded content production.


Professional Experience — Desirable


  • Post-production knowledge relevant to the cinematographer’s role: colour grading, DIT workflows, LUT design and management, and dailies pipelines.
  • Familiarity with local media production landscape.
  • Existing industry networks that could benefit student placement or collaboration opportunities.
  • Professional experience as a screen director, particularly in narrative fiction, documentary, TVC, commercial or branded content.
  • Experience directing actors and translating performance intentions into blocking, coverage and visual strategies.


Teaching & Academic


  • Experience teaching or training in a higher education, further education, or professional development environment where instruction is delivered entirely in English is highly desirable.
  • Ability to design and deliver practical production modules that integrate industry practice with academic rigour.
  • Contribute to the teaching of directing for screen, including working with actors, scene analysis, rehearsal, blocking, coverage and communication between directors, performers and camera departments.
  • Help students understand the creative relationship between directing and cinematography, particularly how performance, staging, lens choice, camera movement, lighting and coverage work together to shape a scene.
  • Experience supervising student productions or creative projects is desirable.
  • Knowledge of higher education and ability to use a range of up-to-date delivery techniques to enthuse and engage students.

  • High level of English proficiency (verbal and written) – Essential. All teaching, assessment, and programme administration at BUV is conducted entirely in English.

  • Lecturer Track (PhD): USD 65,000 – USD 125,000 per annum
