Job description

Great British Energy - Nuclear is an arm’s length body of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, dedicated to supporting the development and deployment of new nuclear technologies in Great Britain. We play a crucial role in advancing nuclear new build, ensuring the UK’s energy security and achieving net-zero carbon emissions. Great British Energy - Nuclear focuses on fostering innovation, facilitating investment, and coordinating efforts across the nuclear industry to build a resilient and sustainable energy future.

Great British Energy - Nuclear’s first step was to start the technology selection process for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in 2023. SMRs can potentially be quicker to deploy and less expensive to build than traditional nuclear power plants because they are smaller, have factory based modular manufacturing and more flexible deployment options. In June 2025, Great British Energy - Nuclear announced that Rolls-Royce SMR was selected as the preferred bidder to build the UK’s first SMRs, following a technology selection process that began in 2023.

Great British Energy – Nuclear is aiming to deliver fast, based on a supportive and collaborative culture which values equality and diversity and creates an inclusive workplace. We draw on deep nuclear expertise – our Executive Committee has over 100 years of nuclear experience at home and abroad. GBE-N will unlock billions of pounds of private and public investment from design to operation, helping to get sites ready for development, and working to grow manufacturing capacity and skills capability.

Our activities will be driven by our values, which are:

Trust - We prioritise safety, we act responsibly and with integrity.

Collaboration - We work as a team; we value diversity and expertise.

Challenge - We are curious and courageous in the way we think and act.

Care - We are thoughtful, inclusive and respectful of others.

Drive - We get things done and we make a difference.

If you have a disability and would prefer to apply in a different format or would like us to make reasonable adjustments to enable you to apply or attend an interview, please contact us at recruitment@greatbritishnuclear.uk and we will talk to you about how we can assist.

Job profile

  • The Planning Regulator Engagement Coordinator will join the GBE-N’s growing, friendly and enthusiastic Safety, Licencing and Assurance (SLA) team. The SLA team aims to create a holistic approach to these engagements that will bring consistency, efficiency, balance, clarity and impact to support the delivery of an SMR power plant at Wylfa.
  • Effective, meaningful and regular engagement between GBE-N, regulators and statutory bodies (e.g. The Island of Anglesey County Council and the Planning Inspectorate) is crucial to the success of the Wylfa SMR project. This role will be an essential part of making sure these engagements work not only for GBE-N, but also for the regulators, statutory bodies and the community of Anglesey.
  • The role will require working with local organisations, which will be key to building trusting relationships and demonstrating our commitment to the community.
  • The role will work alongside GBE-N specialists in planning and major infrastructure projects, as well as wider teams dealing with other regulations compliance.
  • We are looking for candidates with experience in this type of role, preferably in the nuclear industry.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate engagements (meetings, visits, inspections, etc.) with key statutory bodies for planning e.g. Island of Anglesey County Council and the Planning Inspectorate (excludes NRW, EA and ONR, who will be coordinated by others).
  • Work with the Regulatory Engagement Manager to support development, implementation of and compliance with formal working arrangements with statutory bodies.
  • Support the Environmental, Planning and Communications teams with regulatory engagement administration.
  • Support positive relationship building.
  • Coordinate and quality check action tracking, correspondence, and meeting agendas, packs and minutes.
  • Support effective bilingual (English and Welsh) communications between GBE-N and stakeholders.
  • Support management of contract budgets and schedules.
  • Support the sharing of information, insights and good practice across different teams within GBE-N, regulators and statutory bodies.
  • Support performance monitoring, reporting and improvement.
  • General administrative support.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience required:

Essential;

  • Experience of dealing with statutory bodies and / or regulators for large scale infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of Town and Country planning and Development Consent Orders
  • Highly organised, with a good eye for detail.
  • Located on, or willing to relocate to Anglesey or in North Wales.
  • Experience working in large teams and dealing with internal and external staff.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office suite e.g. Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Word, Excel.

Desirable;

  • Experience working in the nuclear, or other highly regulated industry.
  • Experience working in new organisations, where not all processes and procedures are fully developed and established.
  • An understanding of local culture, values and behaviours.
  • Fluent Welsh and English speaker.

Qualifications:
