As a Functional Skills Subject Lead, you will take ownership of Functional Skills across the organisation, ensuring processes run smoothly from start to finish and are robust at every stage. You will play a key role in shaping how learning is delivered and making a lasting difference to young people with Special Educational Needs.
This is a varied role, combining leadership with hands-on teaching. You will stay closely connected to learners while supporting and developing your team. Your ideas will be valued and you will have the freedom to improve and embed Functional Skills in a way that works best for your learners.
You will see learners grow in confidence, gain essential life skills and move closer to employment or independence—all because of the structure and support you have helped put in place.

Key Responsibilities:
Oversee initial assessments and diagnostics for all learners
Take ownership of Functional Skills processes end-to-end, ensuring they are robust, compliant and consistently applied
Monitor learner progress and maintain high standards in Functional Skills delivery
Embed English, Maths and Digital Skills across all programmes
Support and guide tutors through observations, feedback and training
Plan and deliver targeted lessons for entry level to Level 2 learners
Manage exam preparation and ensure smooth, well-organised exam processes
Maintain accurate records, reports and learner plans with clear targets
Work closely with colleagues to align Functional Skills with wider programmes
Build positive relationships with learners and their families

The Benefits
Salary of £37,000 – £40,000
35 hours per week (flexibility considered)
42 weeks per year (term time plus additional weeks)

The Person
To succeed as a Functional Skills Subject Lead, you will need:
Experience teaching Functional Skills (English and Maths)
Strong understanding of SEN and differentiated learning
Confidence in leading, supporting and developing others
Excellent organisation and communication skills
A proactive and positive approach to problem solving
A process-driven mindset with experience overseeing structured processes from start to finish and ensuring they remain robust and compliant.
