The Integrated Research on Energy, Environment and Society group (IREES) within the Energy and Sustainability Research Institute Groningen (ESRIG) is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor who will strengthen research and teaching related to the role of materials and rare earth minerals in the Energy Transition. The position addresses how material requirements, substitution possibilities, vulnerabilities, and supply chain management intersect with the energy transition, including the societal and environmental implications of resource extraction and urban mining.
To address these questions, the candidate will combine existing tools (e.g., global value chain analysis, life cycle analysis, learning curves, system dynamics) with new approaches to analyze raw material demands versus availability and aspects of economic geology and politics in the energy transition. The appointment contributes to global discourses on climate change mitigation, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the energy transition, and biodiversity loss.
Responsibilities- Set up and develop an independent research line and contribute to IREES research lines (Integrated Research on Energy, Environment & Society).
- Supervise PhD students.
- Acquire external funding.
- Promote the societal relevance of research.
- Teach in and contribute to the development of the Energy and Environmental Sciences Master program.
- Contribute to the organization of the faculty by participating in working groups and committees in teaching, research and management.
At the stage of Assistant Professor, 60% of time is for research, 30% for teaching activities, and 10% for organizational tasks. The appointment is for 6 years with a tenure track to apply for tenure after one to three years from the start of the appointment.
QualificationsWe encourage you to apply if you have:
- A PhD in the field of Energy & Sustainability or a related field.
- At least two years of postdoctoral experience outside the Netherlands, preferably in a country different from where the PhD was obtained (this can be compensated by extended research visits abroad).
- A relevant international network.
- Excellent research qualities as shown by a publication record in international peer-reviewed journals.
- A good teaching track record appropriate to career stage.
- Demonstrable organizational competences.
- Cross-cultural sensitivity.
- Good command of spoken and written English.
- A team player with good communication skills.
- Ability to work in an international, culturally diverse environment.
- Ability to acquire substantial external research funding.
- Possession of or willingness to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (Dutch: BKO) within three years.
- Willingness to speak Dutch or motivation to learn within five years.
The position is a full-time tenure-track and includes:
- A salary, depending on qualifications and experience, from €3,974 up to €5,439 gross per month (salary scale 11) for a full-time position.
- A starting package of €40k to travel, organize workshops, etc., plus access to resources for educational development projects.
- Holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus of 8% and 8.3% of yearly salary, respectively.

- The option to work part-time (0.9 FTE or 0.8 FTE).

In case of a full-time contract, the initial appointment is for 6 years with performance assessment after 1–3 years. The assessment may be extended by up to one year for certain life events. A positive assessment leads to a tenured appointment. After 5 years, Assistant Professors may change their focus domain if in the institute’s and organization’s interest and if conditions are satisfied.
