Faculty Civil Engineering & Geosciences

The Faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences (CEG) is committed to outstanding international research and education in the field of civil engineering, applied earth sciences, traffic and transport, water technology, and delta technology. Our research feeds into our educational programmes and covers societal challenges such as climate change, energy transition, resource depletion, urbanisation and the availability of clean water, conducted in close cooperation with a wide range of research institutions. CEG is convinced that Open Science helps to achieve our goals and supports its scientists in integrating Open Science in their research practice. The Faculty of CEG comprises 28 research groups in the following seven departments: Materials Mechanics Management & Design, Engineering Structures, Geoscience and Engineering, Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Transport & Planning, Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management.

The Department of Geoscience and Engineering resides within the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences and encompasses five sections: Applied Geology, Applied Petrophysics and Geophysics, Geo-Engineering, Resource Engineering, and Petroleum Engineering. Within the Department there is considerable scope and encouragement for interdisciplinary research.

PhD candidates, post-docs and staff in the Applied Geophysics and Petrophysics section cooperate in a collegial atmosphere in a fundamental research programme directed towards developing cutting-edge acquisition, imaging and monitoring methodologies for resource exploration, environmental and engineering applications.PhD candidates are stimulated to present their research at international conferences, to publish in high-ranked scientific journals and to form an international professional network. Graduates of the section find employment in the geophysical industry and in the academic world.

Functie omschrijving

One aim of this work is to design a capacitively coupled electrode acquisition system together with a multicomponent fibre-optic system that can be used inside a borehole. Composite casings allow such a design since such electrodes and fibres can be integrated within the composite casing. Composite casings are currently developed by Huisman Equipment BV and this company is an important partner in this project. Another aim of this work is to develop a monitoring system using stochastic inversion of seismic and electromagnetic measurements in the well and from the surface to the well in an urban environment. Both objectives will be implemented and applied as part of the DAPwell effort, where a geothermal doublet is planned to implemented on the campus of the TU Delft. The long-term aim is to be able to follow geothermal processes in the subsurface, such as the cold front when injecting water into a reservoir.

Functie eisen
