How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

Job description

Are you passionate about empowering young people with SEND to grow in confidence, build independence and take meaningful steps towards adulthood? Do you have a specialist subject and the drive to make it genuinely accessible and inspiring for learners who experience the world differently? If so, we would love to hear from you.
This role sits within our Pathway Centre at Southgate Campus, a specialist provision supporting almost 200 students with Education, Health and Care Plans across a wide range of physical, cognitive and medical needs and abilities. You will teach your specialist subject and hold subject lead responsibility within the department, delivering sessions that are motivating, inclusive and tailored to individual learners.
Specialist subjects may include English, mathematics, catering, performing arts, dance, sport, music or horticulture. Whatever your subject background, the common thread is a commitment to helping learners develop the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to progress on their journey to adulthood.
This post is available at either 1 FTE (35 hours) or 0.7 FTE (24.5 hours). Please indicate your preference in your application.
About Barnet and Southgate College
We change lives, empower individuals and connect communities.
We are an ambitious, forward-thinking further education college in North London, proud to serve diverse communities across Barnet, Southgate and beyond. Our 2030 Vision is bold: to be a leading provider of learning and skills development, fostering exceptional educational experiences, driven by innovation, collaboration and excellence.
Our Pathway Centre is one of the most distinctive and rewarding environments in the College. The Centre has a highly skilled, multidisciplinary team of passionate teachers, support practitioners and therapists working side by side, including Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, a Hydrotherapist, a Nurse, and Music and Rebound Therapy specialists. You will not find this depth of specialist expertise in many FE settings.
We invest seriously in the development of our staff. There is a comprehensive package of training on offer, including opportunities to build specific skills in areas such as behaviour management, sensory curriculum, medical interventions and communication methodology. Whether you are experienced in SEND provision or bringing strong subject expertise and a willingness to learn, you will be supported every step of the way.
What You'll Be Doing
No two days look the same, but here is a flavour of what you will be getting involved in:
* Specialist teaching: Deliver motivating, supportive and inspiring sessions in your specialist subject to students with Learning Difficulties or Disabilities across a range of ages, abilities and needs.
* Subject leadership: Act as subject lead for your specialism within the department, identifying training opportunities and contributing to the development of resources and curriculum.
Individual learning plans: Take part in initial and diagnostic assessment and contribute to the setting and review of Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) for each learner.
* Pastoral support: Serve as personal tutor for one or more groups of students, playing an active role in enabling progression and transition towards adulthood.
* Tracking and quality: Keep accurate records of student progress and contribute to quality assurance processes, external verification and inspection preparation.
* Collaborative working: Work closely with the wider Pathway Centre team, Student Services and curriculum areas to ensure learners receive the right level of support in both individual and group settings.
* External partnerships: Develop links with external partners, employers, local communities and schools, and organise and support student trips and work placements.
* Assistive technology: Use appropriate assistive technologies and new learning technologies to enhance access and engagement for your learners.
What You'll Bring
We are looking for someone with genuine passion for working with learners with SEND and the subject expertise to inspire them.
Essential
* A relevant teaching qualification at Level 4 or above (e.g. CertEd/PGCE or equivalent), or commitment to achieving one within 2 years of appointment, supported through College Staff Development

* Relevant experience teaching students with Learning Difficulties or Disabilities

* Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, including ability to liaise with families and external partners
* Computer literacy and willingness to use new media and assistive technologies
* Commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion and safeguarding
Even Better If You Have...

* Experience working with students with autism and general learning disability
* Experience working with students with profound and complex disabilities
