How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

Job description

We’re proud to be supporting the search for an Associate Quantity Surveyor to join a leading UK construction and infrastructure consultancy, working on one of the country’s most exciting and high-profile infrastructure programmes.

Our client’s Infrastructure division delivers commercial and project management services across a wide range of sectors including energy, utilities, transport, water and major capital projects. They support clients on complex schemes that are shaping the future of the UK’s infrastructure, providing specialist expertise across the full project lifecycle.

As part of their continued growth, they are looking for an Associate Quantity Surveyor to join their Birmingham team and play a key role in the delivery of National Grid’s Great Grid Upgrade programme.

About the Great Grid Upgrade

The Great Grid Upgrade is one of the UK’s largest infrastructure programmes, transforming the electricity transmission network to support renewable energy, strengthen energy security and help deliver the transition towards Net Zero.

This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to a nationally significant programme, working on technically complex infrastructure projects that will play a key role in shaping the future of the UK’s energy network.

The Role

As an Associate Quantity Surveyor, you will provide commercial leadership across a portfolio of infrastructure and energy transmission projects. Working closely with senior stakeholders, contractors and client teams, you will oversee commercial performance, manage risk, and ensure the successful delivery of project objectives throughout the project lifecycle.

You will play a key role in mentoring and developing junior team members whilst helping to shape commercial strategy across major infrastructure works.

Key Responsibilities

Lead commercial and cost management activities across major infrastructure projects.

Provide strategic commercial advice to clients and project stakeholders.

Oversee the administration of NEC contracts, including compensation events, change control and early warnings.

Lead cost planning, estimating, forecasting and financial reporting activities.

Manage project budgets, expenditure, cash flow and commercial performance.

Support procurement strategies, tender evaluations and contract negotiations.

Drive value engineering initiatives to maximise project outcomes.

Identify, assess and mitigate commercial risks and opportunities.

Ensure robust commercial governance and reporting standards are maintained.

Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors and project teams.

Support dispute avoidance and commercial issue resolution where required.

Mentor and develop Quantity Surveyors and Assistant Quantity Surveyors within the team.

Contribute to business growth, client development and project-winning activities.

Support the delivery of best practice commercial management across the wider infrastructure portfolio.

Candidate Requirements

Essential

Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related discipline.

Significant experience within infrastructure, utilities, energy, power transmission or major civil engineering projects.

Strong knowledge of NEC3 and NEC4 contracts.

Proven experience managing commercial activities across complex infrastructure programmes.

Excellent stakeholder management and client-facing skills.

Strong commercial awareness and financial acumen.

Experience leading teams and mentoring junior professionals.

Ability to manage multiple workstreams within a fast-paced project environment.

Strong communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills.

Desirable

MRICS qualified or working towards chartership.

Experience working on energy transmission or utilities projects.

Experience operating within large-scale capital delivery programmes.

Familiarity with programme controls, project controls or PMO environments.

Experience working within consultancy environments.

What's on Offer

Opportunity to work on one of the UK's most significant infrastructure programmes.

Exposure to nationally critical energy and transmission projects.

Hybrid working model with flexibility and work-life balance.

Clear career progression within a growing infrastructure division.

Collaborative and supportive consultancy environment.

Long-term project pipeline and career stability.

Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.

This is an exceptional opportunity for an ambitious Quantity Surveying professional looking to take the next step in their career whilst contributing to a project that will shape the UK's infrastructure.
