How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

Job description

Clerk of Works Mechanical and Electrical
Job title: Clerk of Works Mechanical and Electrical
Salary: £41,487.00 - 44,700.00 per annum
Contract: Permanent, full time
Location: Various locations across West Yorkshire
Looking for a Clerk of Works role where you can make a real impact across a diverse estate?
This key position sits within West Yorkshire Police’s Estates and Business Services Directorate, providing expert M&E support across a diverse estate of around 100 operational and specialist buildings. We’re looking for someone who can work confidently both independently and as part of a busy team, managing a varied workload with ease.
As a key member of our technical team, you’ll deliver in-house assurance, on-site inspections, contractor oversight and compliance monitoring across projects, reactive and planned maintenance, and major installations. You’ll work closely with project managers, engineers and specialists to keep our estate safe, compliant and performing at its best.
This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled building services professional to play a vital role in maintaining and improving a complex live estate while contributing to impactful projects that directly support frontline policing. The role is based primarily in Central Wakefield; however, the ability to travel throughout West Yorkshire is essential.
Role and Responsibilities
You will play a key role in ensuring the safe, compliant and efficient delivery of all mechanical and electrical works across the estate. This includes overseeing contractor performance, carrying out on-site inspections, contributing to surveys, validating compliance, and helping project teams resolve technical issues and improving asset data.
To succeed, you’ll need a strong working knowledge of industry regulations, standards, and Health and Safety requirements, along with the ability to tackle day-to-day issues and solve practical problems with confidence.
Key duties include:
· Supervising mechanical and electrical elements of construction, refurbishment, repairs and maintenance works
· Carrying out on-site inspections, audits, validations and monitoring to ensure compliance with design, specification, legislation and industry best practice
· Supporting the delivery of M&E engineering projects, including planned and reactive maintenance and minor works
· Liaising with contractors, consultants and internal teams to resolve technical issues and maintain consistent standards
· Monitoring performance of mechanical and electrical systems, including Building Management Systems (BMS), to ensure safety, reliability and effectiveness
· Working to tender specifications, contract documentation and technical drawings
· Identifying risks, escalating issues and ensuring corrective action is taken where required
· Undertaking building condition and dilapidation surveys to support asset management and project planning
· Witnessing testing and commissioning of new installations and providing technical guidance to colleagues
Expectations
To succeed in this role, you will be expected to:
· Communicate effectively with contractors, consultants and internal teams, providing clear written and verbal technical advice
· Work confidently with specifications, tender scopes, pricing documents and technical design drawings
· Coordinate and manage contractors across multidisciplinary projects, reactive repairs, planned maintenance and PPM programmes
· Validate contractor payment applications (ideal but not essential)
· Apply strong mechanical and electrical engineering knowledge to diagnose and solve technical issues
· Manage competing priorities, work under pressure and meet deadlines
· Interpret regulations, design documentation and compliance requirements accurately
· Apply Health and Safety, Building Regulations and statutory standards in daily work
· Work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
· Travel throughout West Yorkshire as required
Essential Criteria
· A qualified building services engineer with relevant mechanical or electrical experience
· City & Guilds Level 3 / ONC Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or professional experience demonstrating equivalent competency
· Strong knowledge of current industry regulations, standards and Health and Safety legislation
· Experience managing and coordinating mechanical and electrical contractors
· Ability to work to specifications, tender scopes and technical drawings
· Experience validating contractor payment applications
· Excellent technical communication skills
· Ability to prioritise a varied workload and work both independently and as part of a team
Benefits/What We Offer
West Yorkshire Police staff can access a wide range of benefits designed to support work–life balance, wellbeing, development and financial security. These include:
· Generous annual leave allowance - 29 days annual leave, rising to 34 days after five years of service (plus bank holidays)
· Flexible working options, including agile working arrangements to help you manage your professional and personal commitments
· Membership of the West Yorkshire Pension Fund, a secure Defined Benefit CARE (Career Average Revalued Earnings) pension scheme
· Membership options for the Police Treatment Centre and The Police Children’s Charity (eligibility-dependent)
· Access to savings, discounts and cashback rewards through staff schemes, including eligibility to purchase a Blue Light Card
· Option to sign up to our Cycle to work scheme (eligibility-dependent)
· Access to a wide range of internal wellbeing services and support programmes
· Opportunities for career development and training
· Supportive HR policies, including maternity, paternity and other family-friendly provisions
· A meaningful career with a clear sense of purpose supporting policing services that protect communities
· Opportunities to join staff networks, wellbeing groups, and sports clubs
· Be part of an organisation with a long-term commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility
· Work for a diverse and inclusive organisation that aims to be representative of the communities it serves
We welcome talent from the widest possible pool, so we can build a workforce that better reflects the communities we serve, bringing a broader range of skills, experiences, perspectives and ideas to policing.
