These are exciting times in the Bermudian market. Long regarded as a blue-chip offshore financial centre and the gold-standard jurisdiction for (re)insurance work, in recent years the island has seen significant growth across investment funds, fintech, blockchain and digital assets.
The legal market has mirrored this, with several global offshore firms establishing Bermuda offices to compete with the long standing market leaders and elite boutiques. It has created a more dynamic sector, with more opportunities for lawyers from entry level (3 years’ PQE) right through to Senior Counsel and in some cases Partners.
Requirements
To get a work permit in Bermuda, non-Bermudian lawyers will need to be admitted, and have at least 3 years’ PQE, in the UK or an equivalent Commonwealth jurisdiction (such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada or South Africa).
For the roles listed above, candidates are likely to need relevant experience from a respected UK/international commercial law firm, or from another firm in the offshore sector.
Packages
Salaries vary somewhat depending on the firm and the role but as a broad guideline, a 3 years’ PQE lawyer is likely to be earning from $145k-$180k, with the most senior associates well into the $200k’s and counsel in the mid to high $200k’s. All firms have the usual benefits and provide comprehensive relocation assistance (flights, temporary accommodation, cash allowance). The cost of living is high in Bermuda but this is offset by the very low tax rates.
Bermuda
Bermuda offers you the opportunity to live and work in one of the world’s most desirable locations. The island benefits from a mild year-round climate, never too cold in the winter and rarely too hot in the summer. It is famed for its picture-postcard pink sand beaches and crystal-clear ocean, but it also has plenty of history and boasts all the attractions associated with a luxury holiday destination. And if you should need a break from island life, with regular direct flights to London, New York and other parts of the US, it is particularly well connected.
