This PhD study will focus on geohydrochemical processes, that are often responsible for decreasing production or injection rates. Clogging processes can be divided into (1) physical, (2) chemical, and (3) biological processes and be studied by analysing fluid and solid samples as well as operational data. We aim to monitor and investigate hydrogeochemical processes and their interaction in real time at geothermal sites. Monitoring will take place during production and cold injection in the reservoir as well as in the surface infrastructure on-site. Modeling thermo-hydraulic-geochemical processes will be an integral part of the study. Concepts will be developed to avoid hydrogeochemical processes negatively affecting efficient long-term operation. Eventually, data from different geothermal sites will be compared in the Netherlands in cooperation with the industry partner Hydreco Geomec.
Secondment stays of several months are foreseen at ETH Zurich to further investigate hydrogeochemical processes with a focus on the influence of CO2 in the reservoir/CO2 injection and with the industry partner Hydreco Geomec to compare results with data from geothermal reservoirs across Netherlands.
