How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

Job description

Role: Gas Safe Engineer and Plumber

Location: South Wales

Salary: £42,000 - £48,000 (DOE)

Hours: Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm (Full Time – Permanent)

About the Role

Our client is seeking an experienced Gas Safe registered engineer and plumber to join its internal team, delivering domestic refurbishment and insurance reinstatement projects throughout South Wales.

This is a varied, hands-on position covering plumbing and heating surveys, general plumbing repairs, fault diagnosis, first-fix and second-fix installations, boiler and central heating work, bathroom and kitchen plumbing, testing, commissioning, minor making-good and other reasonable multi-skilled duties.

Projects typically involve occupied and vacant residential properties requiring repair or reinstatement following fire, flood, escape of water or accidental damage. The successful candidate will work across the full project lifecycle, from initial inspection and diagnosis through to installation, certification and handover.

The role requires a competent engineer who can undertake gas work only within their current Gas Safe registration categories, while also completing high-quality plumbing and heating works in accordance with the relevant regulations, standards and manufacturers’ instructions.

The successful candidate will also assist the company with obtaining and maintaining Gas Safe business registration and the associated certification and compliance processes. They must therefore be willing and able to be listed as an engineer against the company’s registration, subject to Gas Safe Register requirements, and to support the company’s assessments, inspections, certification, record-keeping and compliance arrangements.

As the position involves regular interaction with homeowners and policyholders, excellent communication skills and a professional, considerate approach are essential.

Key Responsibilities

Surveys, Diagnosis and Technical Assessment

* Attend occupied and vacant residential properties throughout South Wales to undertake plumbing, heating and gas surveys, inspecting existing installations to establish their condition, safety and serviceability

* Diagnose faults affecting boilers, central heating systems, hot and cold-water services, sanitary systems and associated controls, while assessing damage caused by fire, flood, escape of water, accidental damage and other insured events

* Determine whether affected systems and components can be safely retained, repaired or require replacement, identifying any immediate hazards and isolating services where necessary

* Accurately record findings using photographs, measurements, test results, drawings and clear written reports, together with appropriate recommendations for remedial works and safety measures

First and Second Fix Plumbing

* Undertake first and second fix plumbing installations, including hot and cold-water services, heating pipework, soil and waste systems, sanitaryware, brassware, radiators, valves, appliances and final connections

* Install, alter and pressure-test copper, plastic and other approved pipework systems in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions and relevant standards, identifying and rectifying leaks or defects before finishes are applied

* Coordinate service routes and installation requirements with project managers, site teams and other trades, protecting completed work and ensuring concealed services are accurately recorded before closing up

Heating Systems and Gas Work

* Install, replace, service, repair and commission domestic boilers and associated heating systems, including radiators, valves, pumps, controls, thermostats, cylinders and heating pipework, strictly within the engineer’s current Gas Safe registration categories and demonstrated competence

* Carry out heating system flushing, cleaning, dosing and balancing, together with gas tightness testing, purging, appliance testing and commissioning in accordance with current requirements. Inspect flues, ventilation and combustion arrangements and take appropriate action where unsafe conditions are identified

* Diagnose and rectify faults affecting boilers, heating systems, controls and hot-water systems, completing all required Gas Safe notifications, commissioning records, safety documentation and appliance records

Bathrooms, Kitchens and Domestic Refurbishment

* Complete plumbing installations, repairs and remedial works in bathrooms, shower rooms, cloakrooms, utility rooms and kitchens, including baths, showers, WCs, basins, sinks, taps, wastes, traps, valves and domestic appliances where within scope

* Set out and install works accurately in accordance with drawings, specifications and manufacturers’ requirements, coordinating with other trades to achieve a high-quality finish while minimising disruption in occupied properties

* Remove, refit and replace sanitaryware, radiators, sinks, appliances and associated fittings as required for refurbishment and reinstatement works, including careful strip-out of damaged installations

General Plumbing and Multi-Skilled Duties

* Carry out general plumbing repairs and maintenance, including leak detection, defective valves and taps, toilet faults, wastes, traps and minor pipework alterations, together with draining down, isolation, refilling, venting and recommissioning of domestic water and heating systems

* Undertake associated multi-skilled duties where competent, including minor sealing, fixing, boxing-in preparation and making-good, leaving work areas safe, secure, tidy and ready for subsequent trades

* Measure work areas, identify suitable replacement components and prepare material requirements, supporting other trades with access, service isolation and coordinated reinstatement while recognising when specialist expertise, authorisation or certification is required

Testing, Certification and Handover

* Test, commission and certify completed installations within the engineer’s competence and current registration categories, ensuring all works are safe, compliant, fully operational and ready for handover

* Maintain accurate job records, photographs, test results, commissioning sheets, certificates and handover information, clearly demonstrating completed systems and controls to homeowners and policyholders

* Review approved scopes, identify required materials and components, and report any omissions, discrepancies or variations before additional work is undertaken

Gas Safe Certification, Business Registration and Compliance Responsibilities

* Support the company in obtaining and maintaining Gas Safe business registration, including providing competence evidence, supporting assessments and inspections, and being listed as an engineer where required and accepted by the Gas Safe Register

* Help establish and maintain appropriate procedures for gas safety, supervision, certification, Building Regulations notifications, record keeping and quality control, ensuring gas work is undertaken only within the current competence and registration categories of the relevant engineer

* Assist with gas safety records, commissioning documentation, compliance certificates and customer handover documentation, while supporting the review of gas-related work, addressing any safety concerns or non-conformities, maintaining required records and keeping up to date with relevant regulatory and Gas Safe requirements

Essential Qualifications and Experience

* Current Gas Safe registration and valid Gas Safe ID card covering the domestic gas work categories required for the role, supported by current ACS qualifications and a recognised plumbing or domestic heating qualification, apprenticeship, NVQ or equivalent

* Proven experience in domestic plumbing and heating, including boiler installation, servicing and repair, fault finding, first and second-fix plumbing, bathroom and kitchen installations, leak detection, sanitaryware, waste systems, testing, commissioning and completion of relevant gas safety and installation documentation

* Strong knowledge of applicable gas safety requirements, Building Regulations and water regulations, with the ability to interpret drawings, specifications and manufacturers’ instructions, identify unsafe situations and follow appropriate isolation and reporting procedures. A high standard of workmanship, sound diagnostic skills and practical multi-skilled ability are essential, together with a full UK driving licence and willingness to travel throughout South Wales

* Previous experience supporting a Gas Safe registered business, or demonstrable competence and willingness to assist with obtaining and maintaining Gas Safe business registration and associated compliance requirements

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

* Level 3 Plumbing and Domestic Heating qualification or equivalent, together with an appropriate unvented hot-water qualification and additional LPG, cooker, fire or appliance categories where relevant. Manufacturer training or accreditation for commonly installed boiler and heating products would also be advantageous

* Experience in residential refurbishment, property maintenance or insurance reinstatement, including assessing plumbing and heating systems affected by fire, flood or escape of water. Experience with smart heating controls, system zoning and modern energy-efficient heating systems would be beneficial

* Experience managing domestic projects independently from survey through to completion, including preparing technical reports, scopes, estimates and material schedules. Asbestos awareness training and experience establishing or maintaining Gas Safe business registration and compliance procedures would also be advantageous

Skills and Attributes

Excellent plumbing, heating and gas diagnostic ability, with a high standard of workmanship, attention to detail and a strong commitment to gas safety, regulatory compliance and quality

Professional, customer-focused and considerate approach, with the ability to explain technical findings and system operation clearly to homeowners and other stakeholders, particularly when working in occupied properties

Highly organised, reliable and adaptable, with the ability to manage multiple appointments, work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team, understand approved scopes and variations, and undertake reasonable multi-skilled duties within demonstrated competence
