The HSE Officer provides support to the UK HSEQ Manager. The HSEQ department supports the business, its managers, and employees with HSEQ expertise, monitoring operations are conducted in accordance with the relevant regulatory requirements and internal processes. The department provides advice, guidance and training on HSEQ matters and strives to continually improve standards across the operational area by working closely with those on-board to understand where it can be difficult to conduct work safely.
About the Role
Key Tasks/Responsibilities
- Promote and maintain a strong safety culture through vessel visits, listening and engaging with vessel crew to understand where safe work is difficult, and working with the UK HSEQ and other departmental managers to find solutions to the problems identified.
- Assist the UK HSEQ manager with the development and implementation of area’s HSEQ plan, based on the corporate HSEQ and area’s strategy.
- Build strong relationships with all employees and be confident to highlight areas of non-compliance with the HSEQ policies and procedures.
- Independently conduct low level investigations and assist the UK HSEQ Manager with high level investigations.
- Coordinate, conduct and manage the internal ISM audit schedule.
- Coordinate and manage the external SMC audit schedule.
- Maintain out of hours cover of the DPA on a rota basis.
- Answer general HSEQ related enquiries from vessels and managers.
- Gather and analyse statistical data as required by the UK HSEQ manager.
Qualifications
- A formal qualification in health and safety is desired but not essential.
- STCW certificate of competency deck or engine and/or small vessel experience.
- ISM internal auditor is desired but not essential.
Required Skills
- Working with and constructing risk assessments and hazard identification.
- Working with and constructing ISM procedures.
- Basic knowledge of safety legislation and standards.
- Basic knowledge of ISO 9001 / 14001.
- Low level incident investigation.
- Conducting training.
- Dealing with conflict / standing up for what is the correct cause of action.
- Ability to plan and prioritise tasks.
