How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

Job description

Mechanical Surveillance Field Engineer - Pipework & HVAC

Location: Hinkley Point C, Bridgwater, Somerset
Position: Contract
Hours: Monday to Friday, 9.5 hours per day
Scope: Mechanical, Electrical and HVAC - Pipework and HVAC Installation

Rate: Competitive daily rates inside of IR35

Build your mechanical engineering career on one of Europe's largest infrastructure projects

This is an excellent opportunity for an early-mid career Mechanical Engineer or recently qualified engineering professional to gain major-project experience at Hinkley Point C.

Joining the Site Quality Surveillance Team, you will work in the field monitoring mechanical construction activities across the MEH programme. Your primary focus will be the installation and quality compliance of pipework and HVAC systems, alongside associated equipment, supports, welding and mechanical assemblies.

The position would suit someone with relevant experience gained within nuclear, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, chemical, water, power generation or another highly regulated engineering environment.

What matters is a sound mechanical foundation, practical site awareness, strong attention to detail and the confidence to work constructively with contractors while maintaining the required quality standards.

The role

As a Mechanical Surveillance Field Engineer, you will carry out planned, notified and continuous surveillance of construction activities performed by mechanical contractors.

Working closely with the Construction Superintendent, quality teams and other site stakeholders, you will help ensure work is completed in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, Quality Control Plans and contractual technical requirements.

This is a field-based position offering extensive exposure to live mechanical construction, contractor delivery and quality assurance on a major nuclear-new-build programme.

Your responsibilities will include

Carrying out field surveillance of pipework, HVAC and associated mechanical installation activities.
Monitoring the installation and assembly of pipework, pipe supports, pumps, tanks, rotating equipment and mechanical systems.
Checking that construction activities comply with approved drawings, specifications and Contractor Work Information.
Reviewing contractor performance against approved Quality Control Plans, Inspection and Test Plans and relevant procedures.
Confirming that Quality Inspection Records are completed and agreed before work is covered up or progresses to the next stage.
Identifying potential quality issues early and supporting proportionate corrective or preventative action.
Reporting deviations, defects and potential non-conformances to the Construction Superintendent.
Providing clear information to support non-conformance reporting and resolution.
Maintaining accurate, concise and contractually relevant site records and daily diaries.
Monitoring materials, equipment and workmanship against the required technical and quality standards.
Working collaboratively with contractors while retaining an independent and objective approach to quality.
Ensuring that technical or design matters identified in the field are progressed through the formal design and quality processes.
Contributing surveillance findings and performance information to project KPIs.
Supporting a strong nuclear safety, health, safety, environmental and quality culture.

What we're looking for

A qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or a closely related discipline. Equivalent vocational training will also be considered.
Around two years' experience in a mechanical engineering, site engineering, quality, inspection or construction-related position.
Practical knowledge of pipework or HVAC installation activities.
An understanding of mechanical equipment such as pumps, tanks, valves, supports or rotating equipment.
An awareness of welding, fabrication and mechanical assembly processes.
The ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications and construction documentation.
An understanding of quality assurance principles, ideally within an ISO 9001 environment.
Strong attention to detail when inspecting work, equipment, materials and records.
Clear written and verbal communication skills.
The confidence to raise concerns and challenge work constructively where required.
Good organisation skills and the ability to manage competing site priorities.
The ability to build effective working relationships with contractors, engineers and quality personnel.

Desirable experience

Pipework, piping fabrication, pipe support or HVAC installation experience.
Experience working with Quality Control Plans, Inspection and Test Plans or Quality Inspection Records.
Exposure to welding documentation, weld inspection or fabrication records.
Experience gained within nuclear, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, chemical, water, wastewater, power generation, energy-from-waste or oil and gas.
Previous involvement in a major construction, manufacturing or engineering programme.
Awareness of CDM Regulations and controlled document or drawing approval processes.
Experience using tablets or handheld devices to capture site surveillance information.
Knowledge of French would be advantageous but is not essential.
