Role Overview
The Welder / Mechanical Machine Operator will report to the Workshop Supervisor and support the delivery of welding, manual machining and associated workshop services.
The role involves using welding equipment, lathes and other machinery to complete repairs and refurbishment work to a very high standard. The successful candidate will also undertake fault finding, diagnosis, reverse engineering and basic machining activities while working in accordance with defined business processes, Health and Safety requirements and customer expectations.
Key Responsibilities
Perform all key role responsibilities to the highest standards and best practice while conforming to Health and Safety standards
Use welding equipment, lathes and other equipment to carry out refurbishment and repairs to a very high standard on incoming customer jobs
Undertake fault finding, diagnosis and reverse engineering processes that contribute to effective solutions and the completion of jobs
Develop and perform basic machining skills to productively fulfil jobs
Ensure all mechanical checks are conducted on machinery used in the workshop and that any faults are reported
Engage in the development and improvement of standard operating practices (SOPs)
Carry out other tasks as requested to ensure the team meets and exceeds customer expectations
Actively contribute to the team, aiming to improve performance by integrating into and promoting the team ethic
Utilise previous knowledge and problem-solving ability to support other team members
Provide professional welding and mechanical knowledge supported by your own competence level
Contribute to and take part in investigations where welding or mechanical knowledge and experience are required
Learn and enhance new and current skills to support team agility and flexibility
Be familiar with Health and Safety regulations and any statutory instruments
Work under applicable safety systems, rules and regulations
Maintain a full understanding of and contribute to all necessary risk assessments
Take a proactive approach to safety activities, housekeeping, and maintaining and improving workplace standards
Commit to undertaking all necessary statutory training
Comply with Business and Group standards relating to further training, which may be Group or Business-specific
Work in accordance with defined Business processes and procedures
Meet quality standards in accordance with Business processes, procedures and customer expectations
Ensure the timely and effective completion of jobs
Recognise that the profitability of the Business is directly affected by the performance of this role
Requirements
Good written, verbal and digital communication skills
Ability to manage conflicting priorities and contribute to Business decisions regarding the prioritisation of work based on Customer and Business demand
Good numeracy skills, with the ability to understand and interpret engineering drawings
A high degree of accuracy, strong attention to detail and the ability to apply measurement methods to evaluate work
Prior experience of working in a semi-automated welding/machine shop environment is desirable
Prior experience with manual lathes, welding machines, including TIG and MAG, and borers is advantageous
Academic: School leaver minimum qualifications plus Welding Level 2 ONC/NVQ (or equivalent)
Vocational: Ideally time-served apprenticeship and Level 2 qualification and/or five years’ experience, including machining
