How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

Technical Officer/Clerk of Works

Location. Ashington

Salary: up to £45,000 per annum (inclusive of car allowance)

Hours: 37 per week, Monday to Friday.

Contract: Permanent

Closing Date: 5PM on Monday 5th October 2026.

If you are passionate about achieving high standards in new build housing and have strong practical construction knowledge, our Technical Officer/Clerk of Works role could be the next step in your career.

You will play an important role in improving the quality of Bernicia’s new homes, providing practical site inspection, technical advice and support throughout construction, handover and the defects period.

This opportunity comes at a pivotal time following the launch of ‘The Bernicia Effect, Supporting Opportunity’ 2026-31 Corporate Strategy in which we will deliver up to 1000 new homes.

Role Benefits:

28 days annual leave (plus bank holidays) for full-time employees;

Health cash plan membership so you can save money by claiming cash back – over £1000 each year - towards essential healthcare such as dental, optical, physio and loads more. We’ll also cover the costs of including any dependent children in the scheme – up to the age of 21 or 24 if in full-time education – that you may have.

Access to savings on gym memberships plus cash back and discounts on purchases from major retailers including supermarkets, travel, cinema and more.

Generous pension scheme with life insurance of 3 x salary.

About the Technical Officer/Clerk of Works Role:

You will play a key role in ensuring Bernicia’s new homes are delivered to the highest quality standards. Working across a range of development sites, you will inspect construction works, assess workmanship and identify defects, quality concerns, contractual risks and areas of non-compliance. You will ensure that homes are constructed in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, employer requirements, Building Regulations, fire safety requirements and the building contract.

The role involves regular site visits, monitoring construction progress, maintaining accurate site records and producing clear written and photographic reports. You will attend pre-start and progress meetings, represent Bernicia in discussions with contractors and project teams, and build effective working relationships that support the successful delivery of new homes whilst constructively challenging poor workmanship where required.

You will also support the preparation and resolution of defects, contribute to the smooth handover of completed homes and provide technical advice on new build and latent defects. Through your practical knowledge and attention to detail, you will help drive continuous improvements in construction quality, specifications and future scheme delivery, ensuring customers receive homes that meet Bernicia’s standards and long-term expectations.

Please also see the associated Role Profile, for further details on accountabilities, along with guidance on essential and desirable criteria.

About us:

We’ve built Bernicia to be a business that people want to be a part of. We’re one of the North East’s largest and most successful housing providers; building, renting, selling and managing homes as well as providing services to over 60,000 customers.

You will be required to hold a current and valid driving licence.

Interviews will be taking place week commencing 12th October
