Your departmentThe Case & Item Handling Equipment Development (CIHED) team is part of the Toyota Automated Logistics (TAL) technology department delivering functional modules as products, to be used in TAL integrated solutions.
The CIHED organization consists of the product streams Storage and Robotic Workcells, Sort & Transport and AV, two Deployment Groups (WCR and AV) and a Content Development & Training department.
Your positionAs a system architect on the front side of the CIHED organization you are an entrepreneur who is creating business opportunities. You need to influence the decision‑making processes (change management) and maintain a networks of business relationships with decision‑makers and negotiation skills are essential in that respect. You have a clear and well‑substantiated vision of the future of your own focus area in warehousing equipment, also in relation to the full warehouse solution (integrated thinking) and turning these into results. Typical you work on initiatives that need to be ready for pick up by development teams between one till three years from now. You integrate technology, business strategy, customer insight, product management, organization design, people capabilities, and change leadership into coherent, validated concepts with strategic business impact. You act as community engagement manager: building and managing relationships with decision-makers at tactical and strategic level.
Tasks- Clear view and contributor of long‑term company‑wide architectural roadmap.
- Leads strategic technology initiatives to create business.
- Direct influence business results.
- Translates business strategy into architectural concepts on company level.
- Strong leadership skills, able to participate in senior (non‑technical) leadership teams.
- Identify and technically assess external companies for possible (strategic) partnerships or acquisitions.
Looking at the architect in the context of the architecting process, we can identify several critical areas of activity, or domains of competency, that figure prominently in the architect role. These are technology, business strategy, organizational politics, consulting and leadership.
Hard skills and qualifications- A technical master’s degree, preferably in the equipment domain (IT, OT, mechanical, electrical).
- More than 15 years of experience as system architect.
- In‑depth understanding of the warehousing domain and pertinent technologies.
- Development methods and modelling techniques.
- Understanding of organization’s business strategy and rationale.
- Understanding of customer and market trends.
- Applying company’s business practices.
- Take and retake the pulse of all critical influencers of the architecture project.
- Listen, network, influence.
- Build "trusted advisor" relationships.
- Set team context (vision), make decision (stick), build teams, motivate.
- Technology: Creative, Investigative, Practical/pragmatic, Insightful, Tolerant of ambiguity, willing to backtrack, seek multiple solutions, Good at working at an abstract level.
