Starion is currently recruiting a Software Architect / Technical Lead to join its cyber‑security team. The role offers the opportunity to work in a challenging European‑level environment, using state‑of‑the‑art technologies in cyber security and Infrastructure‑as‑a‑Service.
You will join a team of experienced experts with diverse backgrounds and contribute to large‑scale cyber‑security projects for the European Space Agency, NATO, and the European Commission.
This is a permanent position, based in Leiden, the Netherlands, offering strong opportunities for professional growth and hands‑on involvement in high‑impact projects.
Tasks and activitiesThe scope of work will include:
- Contributing to the R&D of cyber‑security products enabling simulation and testing of complex systems across space, defence, and critical infrastructure.
- Collaborating with stakeholders to define functional and non‑functional requirements for new software and applications.
- Using modern tools and methodologies to design high‑level and detailed software solutions.
- Defining all aspects of development, from technology selection and workflows to coding and quality standards.
- Clearly communicating concepts and guidelines to the development team.
- Overseeing development progress to ensure alignment with the initial design.
- Delivering technical guidance and mentoring within an Agile development team.
- Implementing code in compliance with defined quality standards.
- Ensuring delivered software complies with all defined quality standards.
- Solving and clearly communicating complex problems across application design, development, and user experience.
The following skills and experience are mandatory:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field.
- More than five years of professional software development experience, including technical leadership or architectural responsibilities.
- Experience with large‑scale, complex software systems.
- Extensive full‑stack development experience
- Strong experience with modern Java (Java SE 20+ and recent LTS versions) and JavaScript/TypeScript, including modern front‑end frameworks.
- Significant understanding of common software architecture patterns, including layered, hexagonal, event‑driven, and microservices.
- Experience with Agile methodologies, Git‑based source control, and UML/SysML architectural modelling
- CI/CD and automated testing experience.
- Strong knowledge of software quality assurance, static analysis, and code quality tools, such as, SonarQube, with strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Proven technical team leadership and mentorship.
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
The following skills and experience would be highly desirable, in order of priority;
- Experience with software architecture documentation for complex systems.
- Knowledge of both private and public cloud platforms (OpenStack, Azure, AWS, etc.).
- MBSE principles experience.
- Exposure to Spring Boot and cloud‑native platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
- Proven experience with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes, including building, deploying, and operating containerized workloads in development and production environments.
- Recognised project management certification (PMP, PRINCE2, or equivalent).
