Over the past decade, Tata Steel R&D has developed its own software to monitor, predict and control steel strip temperatures in the continuous annealing and hot dip galvanising lines of Tata Steel Europe. As the quality of the strip surface depends critically on the oxide evolution in the annealing furnaces, accurate strip temperature control is essential in ensuring a product of good and homogeneous quality.
In order to improve the control of the oxidation process during annealing, in line actuators have been integrated that are capable of locally adjusting the atmosphere (in particular: its oxygen content). A model has been developed to predict internal and external oxidation of the steel elements as a function of process temperatures and oxygen availability.
Details of the assignment
The primary goal is to combine the oxide evolution model with the annealing process software to generate predictions of final surface quality under different atmosphere actuator settings. With the outcome of these predictions, the feasibility of using these actuators in real time can be evaluated. Moreover, it should clarify the possibilities and/or limitations of using the oxide model for real time atmosphere adjustments. The final result will be a series of recommendations on how to best use the model and the actuators in daily practice. Depending on the length of the internship, the assignment can be expanded to include lab trials to validate the recommendations.
You will work in the Thermal Processes knowledge group, which consists of about fifteen researchers from various backgrounds. Your work will typically consist of code development, but since the final application relies heavily on first principle process models, there is also room to explore some of the physics and chemistry behind it.
