How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

Job description

Help Shape the UK’s Energy Future

Temporary Works Designer Opportunity with the Civil Works Alliance (CWA), Supporting Sizewell C

As part of the CWA (Civil Works Alliance), you will support the building of Sizewell C. Sizewell C will be a 3.2-gigawatt power station generating low-carbon electricity for around 6 million homes and will play a key role in our energy future, supplying reliable, clean electricity for at least 60 years. This role will be within the CWA Wide Section.

What will you do?

The project requires a Temporary Works Designer to join the Civil Works Alliance (CWA) Engineering and Assurance Team. The role will deliver temporary works design and design coordination across the three CWA delivery sections: Earthworks and Enabling, Main Civil Works, and Marine and Tunnels. It will provide technical temporary works design input and design checking throughout the project technical lifecycle, from Early Contractor Involvement through to detailed design delivery and construction support.

The role involves developing temporary works schemes that meet Programme Alliance Agreement (PAA) requirements. This includes coordinating interfaces with permanent works, ensuring buildability and construction team acceptance, working within budget constraints, and presenting proposals for client approval. The project team includes CWA personnel, lead design consultants, internal and external temporary works designers, and subcontractors.

Given the varied temporary works scope, the role would suit someone with broad experience delivering temporary works design on major infrastructure projects. Experience designing haul roads, working platforms, formwork and falsework, and excavation solutions would be beneficial.

The Temporary Works Designer will:

Design, check and technically assure temporary works solutions in accordance with BS 5975, Eurocodes, CIRIA guidance and other relevant standards.

Deliver in-house temporary works designs across CWA-wide requirements and the Earthworks and Enabling, Marine and Tunnels, and Main Civil Works scopes, including formwork, falsework, scaffolding, soil slope stability, tower crane foundations and access platforms.

Develop, implement and manage processes for standard design solutions and proprietary temporary works systems,

Apply knowledge of common temporary works systems, such as Doka, PERI, Mills, Layher, HAKI and GASS.

Check subcontractor and third-party temporary works designs, including formwork, falsework and temporary working platforms, providing technical assurance where required.

Prepare and review calculations, drawings, reports, sketches, models, design risk assessments and other technical deliverables in accordance with project requirements.

Advise site, office, design and construction teams on buildability, sequencing, construction methodology and safe, innovative and cost-effective temporary works solutions, including information to support Target Outturn Cost estimating.

Ensure compliance with CDM regulations, HSWA, LOLER, PUWER and the Balfour Beatty Temporary Works Management Procedure.

Ensure internal and subcontractor designs meet the temporary works design brief, required timescales and technical approval requirements, including Approval in Principle submissions for clients and external stakeholders.

Identify, assess and communicate design and residual risks, maintaining a strong focus on Zero Harm and applying the principles of prevention through design and engineering.

Mentor junior engineers, support continuous improvement of design processes and tools, and report on temporary works design resolution and interfaces with permanent works and subcontractor designs.

Support development and implementation of digital processes/culture/technology to support project delivery during the Design, Construction and Handover phases.

Support development and implementation of a process for the production and management of standard design solutions.

Support design interface management between CWA and it’s stakeholders
