Overview
The Flavourist plays a key role in flavour development, innovation, flavour library management, and supporting commercial growth by delivering creative and technically robust flavour solutions in response to customer briefs. Working closely with customers, application technologists, production teams, suppliers, and cross-functional colleagues, the Flavourist will develop flavours that meet both customer expectations and business objectives.
The successful candidate will possess a strong understanding of raw materials, flavour applications, production processes, regulatory requirements, analytical techniques, and sensory evaluation. They will also contribute to the continuous improvement of flavour development through experimentation, market awareness, and collaboration.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently develop flavour formulations in line with customer requirements and business objectives.
- Lead flavour development projects from concept through to completion.
- Explore and evaluate new ingredients and technologies.
- Create innovative flavour solutions for sweet food and beverage applications.
- Present technical flavour solutions to customers and participate in customer meetings and workshops.
- Mentor and support junior members of the flavour creation team.
- Compound and process flavour samples to support development projects.
- Conduct physical, chemical, and sensory testing of flavour formulations.
- Support flavour matching and duplication projects in collaboration with analytical teams.
- Ensure compliance with relevant flavour regulations and labelling requirements.
- Work cross-functionally with R&D, application, quality, planning, and production teams.
- Participate in sensory panels and flavour evaluations.
- Maintain flavour and raw material databases, libraries, and documentation.
- Support the commercialization and scale-up of new flavour innovations.
- Provide technical expertise on extraction, distillation, emulsification, and spray-drying technologies.
- Troubleshoot flavour production challenges and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Analyze market products and consumer trends to identify opportunities for innovation.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Food Technology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Life Sciences, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 7 years of hands-on flavour creation and development experience, or certification through a recognized flavour industry body.
- Strong background in flavour chemistry, food chemistry, flavour applications, and sensory science.
- Proven experience developing flavours for sweet food and beverage applications.
- Excellent sensory evaluation skills with a highly developed sense of taste and smell.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and work effectively under pressure.
- Excellent communication and customer-facing skills.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Willingness to travel when required.
