How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Cobalt is partnering with a growing UK professional services firm to appoint a Business Rates Surveyor / Senior Surveyor to join its established London team.

    The practice advises a varied client base across offices, industrial property, retail and specialist operational assets. Its multidisciplinary structure also provides exposure to complementary services, including capital allowances, VAT and transfer pricing.

    This is an opportunity to join a close-knit, ambitious team offering direct client exposure, meaningful responsibility and genuine scope for progression. The position is based in Central London and offers hybrid working.

    The role and responsibilities

    You will:

    Manage a varied business rates caseload covering different property types and valuation methods.
    Prepare and submit Checks and Challenges under the English business rates framework.
    Review assessments and identify opportunities for appeals, reliefs and liability savings.
    Undertake property inspections and gather relevant valuation evidence.
    Prepare clear, well-supported reports and Challenge submissions.
    Negotiate with the Valuation Office Agency.
    Provide clients with regular updates on appeal progress, liability and accruals.
    Support new instructions and client work associated with the 2026 revaluation.
    Develop relationships with clients and other property professionals.
    Keep up to date with rating legislation, case law and wider market changes.
    Take increasing responsibility for key accounts and larger client portfolios as your experience develops.The skills and experience required

    Experience in business rates gained within a consultancy, the Valuation Office Agency or a comparable environment.
    A good understanding of the Check, Challenge and Appeal framework.
    Experience analysing assessments, preparing valuation evidence and supporting negotiations.
    Strong written, analytical and client communication skills.
    The confidence to manage competing priorities and take ownership of your work.
    An RICS-accredited property degree, MRICS qualification or relevant IRRV accreditation.
    Experience using rating software and property data platforms would be helpful but is not essential.The firm is open to candidates at Surveyor or Senior Surveyor level, including recently qualified professionals, those with several years of post-qualification experience and strong candidates approaching their APC. Business development experience is welcomed but is not a prerequisite.
