How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Controls Engineer

    Location

    Hinckley / Coventry area, with customer-site travel

    Working Pattern

    Full-time, 37.5 hours per week

    Salary

    £45,000 - £60,000 (depending on skills and experience) plus paid overtime for approved additional hours worked.

    The Role

    Due to continued business growth and the successful award of significant new projects, we are looking to recruit two experienced Controls Engineers for a well established client.

    This role offers the opportunity to work on a wide variety of industrial automation and machinery projects, taking responsibility for the design, development, testing and commissioning of PLC, HMI and safety software systems.

    You will be involved throughout the full project lifecycle, from software development through to site commissioning and customer handover. Customer-site travel will be required during commissioning activities, with flexible or hybrid working available during suitable software development phases.

    Key Responsibilities

    Design and develop control software for Siemens TIA Portal/S7 and/or Rockwell Studio 5000-based systems.
    Support legacy systems where required, including Siemens S7 Classic and STL/IL code.
    Write PLC software from first principles for industrial machinery and automation projects.
    Develop HMI software and operator interfaces.
    Write, test and commission safety-related control software in line with project requirements and safety matrices.
    Configure and commission VFDs, servo drives, motion systems, fieldbus networks and remote I/O.
    Work with industrial communication networks such as ProfiNet, Profibus, EtherNet/IP and similar protocols.
    Read and interpret electrical drawings, I/O schedules and functional design specifications.
    Carry out electrical and control system fault finding, including basic testing using a multimeter.
    Produce and maintain project documentation, including Functional Design Specifications (FDS), commissioning records, test documentation and O&M manuals.
    Collaborate with project managers, electrical designers, panel builders, installation teams and commissioning engineers.
    Commission systems on customer sites throughout the UK, including occasional overnight stays and weekend work where required.

    Essential Requirements

    Experience developing PLC software from first principles within an industrial automation, machinery or systems integration environment.
    Strong experience using Siemens TIA Portal/S7 and/or Rockwell Studio 5000.
    Experience developing HMI applications and operator interfaces.
    Experience writing, testing and commissioning safety-related control software.
    Experience configuring and commissioning VFDs, servo drives, fieldbus networks and industrial control hardware.
    Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, I/O schedules and functional specifications.
    Practical commissioning and fault-finding experience within industrial environments.
    Experience producing technical documentation, including FDS, commissioning documentation and O&M manuals.
    Strong communication skills and the ability to work directly with customers and project teams.
    Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
    Full UK driving licence.
    Ability to travel to customer sites as required.

    Desirable Experience

    Siemens S7 Classic, STL and/or IL programming.
    Industrial robotics experience, particularly KUKA, ABB or FANUC.
    Motion control systems including Siemens, Rockwell, Bosch Rexroth or similar platforms.
    CNC systems, particularly Siemens, Bosch or FANUC.
    Machine safety training or formal functional safety experience.
    SCADA, vision systems or advanced HMI platforms.
    Familiarity with EPLAN Electric P8.
