Mechanical Design Engineer

An established Daventry manufacturer of specialist fabricated steel structures for vehicle applications is looking for an experienced Design Engineer to sit with their on-site production and fabrication team.
You will turn customer requirements into 3D CAD and manufacturing drawings, then see those parts through laser, CNC, weld and build. A lot of the work is tubular and sheet fabrications, plus machined parts, often reverse-engineered from an existing vehicle or structure.
Key responsibilities
* Produce 3D CAD and detailed manufacturing drawings for tube, sheet and machined parts
* Work daily with welders, machinists and the fabrication team to get designs built
* Reverse-engineer and measure existing structures (CMM / portable metrology) so new work fits first time
* Support quality, production and occasional site visits, as you would in a small manufacturer
* Deal with customers on design intent, tolerances and practical manufacturing
What we are looking for
* Experience working as a mechanical / fabrication design engineer in a design-and-make shop, issuing CAD and manufacturing drawings to a weld / CNC / fabrication team
* HNC Mechanical Engineering or equivalent (HND or degree useful)
* Strong 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Fusion 360 or Inventor)
* Used to designing welded fabrications: tubular work, chassis, trailers, exhausts, plant equipment or similar
* Comfortable on the shop floor and with measurement / inspection
* Full UK driving licence, as site visits come up
Backgrounds from trailer, chassis, exhaust, agricultural or specialist vehicle fabrication are desirable.
