How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Principal Safety Engineer

    Location:New Malden
    Salary:Up to £75,000 DOE

    The Role

    We're looking for an experienced Principal Safety Engineerto lead safety assurance activities across the design, development and maintenance of Platform Management Systems for naval vessels, including surface ships and submarines.

    You'll work across multi-disciplinary engineering teams, influencing system design and ensuring projects meet customer and safety requirements.

    Key Responsibilities

    Lead safety engineering activities and deliver agreed project milestones.
    Ensure safety targets are achieved through effective hardware, software and firmware design.
    Lead safety reviews, audits and safety committee meetings.
    Carry out and oversee safety analysis, including HAZOP, FFA, FTA, FMECA and LOPA.
    Lead risk assessments and develop ALARP justifications.
    Produce high-quality technical documentation and safety arguments.
    Present safety cases and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.
    Work closely with systems, hardware, software, ILS, project and customer teams.
    Keep up to date with relevant standards and industry best practice.
    Support and mentor junior engineers where required.

    What We're Looking For

    Experience working in a safety-related engineering environment.
    Experience leading technical activities.
    Knowledge of IEC 61508, Def Stan 00-056and relevant defence standards.
    Experience with safety assurance of COTS processor-based systems and/or high-integrity software.
    Strong understanding of hardware and software failure modes.
    Experience with hazard analysis, FMECA, FTA and Functional Failure Analysis.
    Experience with risk assessment and ALARP.
    Ability to work effectively within multi-disciplinary teams.
    Master's degree, degree, HND or HNC in Engineering, Safety Management or a related discipline.This is a great opportunity to join a technically challenging defence environment and play a key role in the safety of complex naval systems.
