How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    HSE Manager

    Rotherham

    Heavy Engineering / Machinery Manufacturing

    £45,000

    About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced and technically capable Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Manager to lead and continuously improve safety standards across our heavy industrial manufacturing operation.

This is a key role supporting the manufacture, installation and maintenance of heavy mining, quarrying and recycling machinery. You will take ownership of Health, Safety and Environmental compliance across our workshop and at customer sites, ensuring risks are effectively managed wherever our people work.

The successful candidate will combine strong HSE leadership with a practical, hands-on mechanical engineering background. You will be comfortable spending time on the shop floor and visiting customer sites, working closely with production teams, engineers, management and customers to ensure safe, efficient ways of working.

    Key Responsibilities

    * Lead all Health, Safety and Environmental activities across the workshop, manufacturing operation and customer sites.

    * Develop, implement and maintain HSE management systems in line with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001.

    * Ensure compliance with UK Health and Safety legislation, including PUWER, LOLER, COSHH, machinery guarding and Lockout/Tagout procedures (LOTO/LOTOTO).

    * Prepare, review and maintain Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) for workshop activities, machinery installation, servicing and maintenance work at customer locations.

    * Carry out routine safety inspections, workshop audits, site visits and risk assessments across fabrication, assembly and maintenance activities.

    * Lead investigations into accidents, injuries, dangerous occurrences and near-misses, completing root-cause analysis and implementing effective corrective actions.

    * Manage and maintain the staff Training Matrix, ensuring employees hold the correct qualifications, certifications, inductions and competencies for their roles.

    * Deliver safety inductions, toolbox talks, refresher training and competency assessments for factory, assembly and field-based personnel.

    * Monitor and report HSE performance through leading and lagging indicators, identifying trends and driving continuous improvement.

    * Provide practical support around machinery safety and maintenance activities, using your mechanical engineering knowledge where required.

    * Act as the primary point of contact for external regulatory bodies, including the Health and Safety Executive.

    About You

    * NEBOSH National Diploma, Level 6 NVQ in Occupational Health and Safety, or an equivalent qualification.

    * GradIOSH or Chartered Membership of IOSH (CMIOSH) is preferred.

    * At least five years’ senior HSE management experience in heavy engineering, steel fabrication or heavy industrial manufacturing.

    * Previous practical, hands-on experience as a Mechanical Engineer, with the confidence to support maintenance activities if required.

    * Strong working knowledge of UK machinery safety legislation, PUWER, LOLER, COSHH, environmental permitting and relevant ISO standards.

    * Proven experience creating and reviewing Risk Assessments, Method Statements and safe systems of work.

    * Experience managing training records, competency frameworks and staff Training Matrices.

    * A visible, practical leadership style, with the ability to influence shop-floor teams, field engineers, senior managers and directors.

    * Strong analytical skills, with experience using HSE data and KPIs to identify risks and improve performance.

    Why Join Us?

This is an opportunity to join a well-established engineering business where people are genuinely valued. The company has built a strong reputation for retaining its people, with many employees choosing to build long-term careers within the organisation.
