How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Scala Engineer

    Telford/ Hybrid - 2 days per week onsite
    £470 per day inside IR35
    6 months duration

    Are you an experienced Scala Developer looking to work on one of the UK's most significant digital transformation programmes?

    We're seeking a talented Scala Engineer to join a high-performing Agile team delivering modern cloud-based services as part of a major government digital programme. You'll be helping to build secure, scalable applications that improve the way millions of people interact with essential public services.

    This is an opportunity to work with modern technologies, collaborative engineering teams and cloud-native architectures while contributing to services used across the UK.

    The Role

    As a Scala Engineer, you'll be part of a multidisciplinary Agile team responsible for designing, developing and supporting high-performance Scala Play microservices.

    Working closely with Developers, Business Analysts, User Researchers, Designers and QA Engineers, you'll help deliver user-focused digital services using modern software engineering practices including Test Driven Development (TDD), pair programming and continuous integration.

    You'll also have the opportunity to contribute to technical decisions, share knowledge across engineering communities and help shape the future of the platform.

    Key Responsibilities

    Develop high-quality applications using Scala and the Play Framework.
    Build and maintain cloud-based microservices.
    Deliver user stories within Agile Scrum teams.
    Write clean, well-tested code using TDD.
    Develop unit and integration tests.
    Participate in pair programming and code reviews.
    Support applications through deployment and production.
    Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
    Collaborate with multidisciplinary delivery teams.
    Drive continuous improvement across engineering practices.

    Essential Skills

    Strong commercial experience with Scala.
    Experience using the Play Framework.
    Experience developing RESTful microservices.
    Strong knowledge of unit and integration testing.
    Experience working within Agile delivery teams.
    Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.

    Desirable Skills

    Cloud platform experience (AWS preferred).
    CI/CD and DevOps experience.
    Knowledge of application security principles.
    Experience with containerisation technologies.
    Public sector or large-scale enterprise project experience
