How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Development Engineer (Civil)
    Wakefield

If you've built your career delivering residential developments and are looking to join a business where you'll have a genuine influence over projects rather than being one small part of a much larger machine, this is an excellent opportunity to join a growing family-led housebuilder with exciting plans for the future.

You'll be joining a close-knit Technical team within a business that has earned an excellent reputation for delivering thoughtfully designed, high-quality homes across Yorkshire and is now expanding throughout the East Midlands and Lincolnshire. Their developments typically range from around 20 to 100 units, with a mix of open market housing and affordable schemes delivered alongside Housing Associations. Unlike many developers, the portfolio also includes both standard and specialist care home developments, together with selected commercial projects through the wider business, giving you exposure to a much broader variety of work than a traditional volume housebuilder.

Working as part of an expanding in-house design team, you'll play a key role in taking developments from land acquisition through planning, detailed design and ultimately construction. This is a varied position that combines hands-on engineering with consultant management, allowing you to influence projects from the earliest feasibility stages right through to completed developments.

Using AutoCAD, Civil 3D and Site 3D, you'll produce layouts, feasibility studies and infrastructure designs where appropriate, whilst coordinating and reviewing work produced by external engineering consultants. Detailed civil engineering design is typically undertaken by specialist consultancies, so you'll be responsible for ensuring designs are technically robust, commercially practical and delivered to programme, acting as the link between consultants, internal departments and site teams.

You'll coordinate highways, drainage, levels, earthworks, external works and utility information, ensuring technical submissions progress smoothly through the approvals process. A strong understanding of residential infrastructure design is essential, including experience with Section 38, Section 278 and Section 104 agreements, SuDS, adoptable highways and drainage, utility coordination and liaison with Local Authorities, Water Companies and statutory consultees.

Working closely with architects, planning consultants, commercial teams, construction staff and design managers, you'll help resolve technical challenges, coordinate multidisciplinary information and ensure developments move efficiently from concept through to completion.

We're particularly keen to hear from Civil Engineers or Senior Engineers who have worked for a PLC or larger regional housebuilder, where you'll already understand the demands of delivering multiple residential developments simultaneously, coordinating external consultants, managing technical approvals and driving schemes through to site.

Applications are equally welcome from engineers currently working within civil engineering consultancies who have extensive experience delivering residential developments for national or regional housebuilders. If you've worked closely with Technical Departments, understand the pace and expectations of residential development and are looking to move client-side, this role offers an excellent opportunity to do exactly that.

This is a business that has retained the collaborative culture and accessibility of a family-owned company whilst continuing to grow in a measured and sustainable way. The Technical team itself is expanding, creating genuine opportunities to influence how developments are delivered, work closely with senior decision makers and play a key role in shaping the future of the department. You'll enjoy the autonomy and responsibility often associated with a smaller developer while still working on technically interesting schemes spanning private housing, affordable developments, Housing Association projects, standard and specialist care homes, and selected commercial developments.
