How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Contracts Manager – Civil Engineering

Location: Hatfield, Doncaster / Yorkshire Region
    Employment Type: Permanent
    Salary: Competitive salary + package
Sector: Civil Engineering / Main Contractor

Fulcrum Recruitment is working with a well-established civil engineering main contractor that is looking to appoint an experienced Contracts Manager to oversee the successful delivery of multiple civil engineering schemes across Yorkshire and the surrounding region.

This is a permanent opportunity with a respected principal contractor delivering a varied range of infrastructure, highways, public realm and general civil engineering projects. The role will be based from the company’s office in Hatfield, Doncaster, with projects delivered regionally across Yorkshire and the wider surrounding area.

The company delivers schemes typically ranging from £1m to £15m, with average project values generally sitting between £5m and £8m, and the capability to deliver larger schemes where required.

    The Role

As Contracts Manager, you will take senior operational responsibility for the successful delivery of multiple civil engineering projects across the region.

You will oversee Project Managers, Senior Project Managers and wider site delivery teams, ensuring projects are delivered safely, commercially, contractually and operationally to a high standard.

This is a true cradle-to-grave role, requiring involvement from early client engagement, business development and account management, through to pre-construction, estimating, planning, commercial input, project delivery, handover and final account.

You will work closely with clients and internal teams to help identify the right solution at the right price, ensuring projects are properly planned, resourced and commercially controlled from the outset.

The role will also involve regular site visits across Yorkshire, supporting project teams, removing blockers, reviewing progress, managing risk and ensuring projects are running smoothly.

    Project Types

The contractor delivers a broad range of general civil engineering and infrastructure schemes, including highways, road adaptations, drainage, flood alleviation, public realm, streetscape improvements, structures, cycleways, tow paths and footpaths.

Projects are delivered across Yorkshire and the surrounding region, with current and secured work including areas such as Doncaster, Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Hull, Scunthorpe, Huddersfield, Brighouse, Elland, Bradford, Halifax, Kirklees, Harrogate, York, Beverley, Barton and the wider East Riding region.

    Key Responsibilities

Oversee the delivery of multiple civil engineering projects across Yorkshire and the surrounding region.

Manage and support Project Managers, Senior Project Managers, Site Agents, Engineers and wider site teams.

Take responsibility for operational performance across safety, quality, programme, commercial control, client satisfaction and project governance.

Provide senior input from early client discussions, account management and business development through to pre-construction and delivery.

Work closely with estimating, planning, design and commercial teams to review methodology, buildability, risk, programme and pricing strategy.

Support tender and pre-construction activity by providing practical operational input and helping to identify the most effective delivery solution.

Maintain strong client relationships, acting as a senior point of contact across live and upcoming projects.

Review project progress, programme performance, resource requirements, commercial position, risks and key actions.

Visit sites regularly to support delivery teams, solve problems, remove blockers and ensure projects are running efficiently.

Work closely with commercial teams on valuations, subcontract management, change control, CVRs, compensation events, early warnings and NEC contract processes.

Ensure high standards of health, safety, environmental management, quality assurance and project documentation across all sites.

Lead, mentor and develop operational teams, helping to raise standards and improve consistency across project delivery.

    Candidate Requirements

Proven experience as a Contracts Manager, Senior Project Manager or experienced Project Manager ready to step into a wider operational management role.

Strong background delivering civil engineering schemes for a main contractor.

Experience managing multiple projects or overseeing several project teams concurrently.

Experience across works such as highways, roads, drainage, structures, flood alleviation, public realm, cycleways, footpaths or general infrastructure.

Strong commercial understanding, with the ability to manage cost, risk, programme, change and client expectations.

Good working knowledge of NEC forms of contract, including early warnings, compensation events, change control and risk management.

Strong client-facing skills, with the confidence to support account management, business development and long-term client relationships.

Ability to provide practical input at early design, planning, estimating and pre-construction stages.

Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to support delivery teams and resolve issues quickly and professionally.

Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel across sites within the Yorkshire region.

HND, degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline would be beneficial.

Professional membership such as ICE or CIOB would be advantageous but is not essential.

    The Opportunity

This is an excellent long-term opportunity with a stable and well-regarded civil engineering contractor offering regional work, varied projects and genuine progression.

The business has a strong pipeline of secured and upcoming work across Yorkshire, with long-term commitment to the region and no regular requirement to lodge away.

The role would suit an experienced Contracts Manager, or a Senior Project Manager looking for the next step, who wants to join a respected regional contractor and play a key role in the continued growth and successful delivery of civil engineering projects across Yorkshire.

    Package

The package includes a competitive salary, company car or car allowance, pension and standard company benefits.

The role also offers long-term stability, varied design-and-build civil engineering projects, regional work only, strong senior management support and clear progression opportunities.
