Location: North East (Secure Environment Project)
Rate: £350–£450 per shift (DOE)
Contract: Freelance / Contract
Start: ASAP – December 2026
We are recruiting for a Freelance Mechanical Engineer to support delivery on a major secure government infrastructure project in the North East.
Working as part of the site delivery team, you will take ownership of mechanical engineering coordination and execution across a complex live construction environment, ensuring programme, quality and compliance requirements are achieved.
This role would suit someone with a strong building services / MEP background who is comfortable operating on fast-paced contractor-led projects.
RESPONSIBILITIES
•Manage and coordinate mechanical installation activities on site
•Review and interpret mechanical drawings, specifications and technical submissions
•Oversee subcontractor performance and progress
•Carry out inspections and ensure quality standards are maintained
•Support commissioning, testing and handover activities
•Coordinate with electrical, civils and project delivery teams
•Raise and close technical queries (RFIs) and resolve site issues
•Ensure works are delivered safely and in accordance with programme requirements
•Attend progress and coordination meetings with stakeholders
REQUIREMENTS
•Mechanical Engineering qualification (HNC/HND/Degree or equivalent)
•Proven experience delivering mechanical building services / MEP projects
•Experience on large-scale construction projects
•Strong site coordination and subcontractor management capability
•Commissioning and handover experience beneficial
•SMSTS / CSCS advantageous
•Ability to work within controlled and secure project environments
