How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

Do you have a background in the uniformed services and a passion for preparing the next generation to follow in your footsteps? Are you looking for a role where your real-world experience makes a real difference every day? If so, we think you will feel right at home here.

As our new Public Services Lecturer, you will deliver high-quality, industry-relevant teaching that prepares learners for careers in the police, fire service, armed forces, ambulance service and beyond. Based at our Colindale campus, you will develop learners' discipline, confidence, teamwork and resilience, giving them the professional behaviours and qualifications they need to succeed.

This is not a role where you simply deliver a fixed programme. You will be actively involved in shaping a curriculum that reflects the realities of uniformed service life, contributing your professional expertise and connecting learners to authentic experiences, including regular visits to the RAF Museum at Hendon, employer partnerships and progression pathways into employment, apprenticeships and higher education.

    About Barnet and Southgate College
We change lives, empower individuals and connect communities.

We are an ambitious, forward-thinking further education college in North London, proud to serve diverse communities across Barnet, Southgate and beyond. Our 2030 Vision is bold: to be a leading provider of learning and skills development, fostering exceptional educational experiences, driven by innovation, collaboration and excellence.

Our Uniformed Protective Services provision is well-established, well-resourced and clearly focused on learner success. The team is led by strong curriculum leadership and built on a collaborative culture where your professional expertise is valued and your ideas are welcomed. Our Colindale campus is closely linked to the RAF Museum at Hendon, where learners attend regularly, creating an authentic and distinctive learning environment you will not find anywhere else.

You will be joining a department that is genuinely committed to learner progression, whether that means a learner stepping into uniform for the first time, securing a place at university, or gaining the confidence to reach for something they previously thought was out of reach.

    What You'll Be Doing

No two days look the same, but here is a flavour of what you will be getting involved in:

    * Inspiring teaching: Deliver high-quality, inclusive sessions that develop the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours learners need for a career in the uniformed services.

    * Learner success: Track progress, support achievement and help learners move confidently into employment, apprenticeships, higher education or public service careers.
Authentic experiences: Connect learners to the realities of public service life through visits, employer partnerships, competitions and enrichment activities, including links to the RAF Museum at Hendon.

    * Curriculum shaping: Contribute your sector expertise to curriculum development, resource creation and quality improvement.

    * Assessment and compliance: Manage assessment and internal quality assurance processes to awarding body standards, including accurate tracking of learner evidence and preparation for external verification.

    * Employability and progression: Embed English, Maths and wider professional skills development to support learners in completing their course and taking their next step.

    * Pastoral support: Act as a tutor and mentor, helping learners navigate challenges and supporting their attendance, wellbeing and overall success.

    What You'll Bring

We are looking for someone who combines genuine sector knowledge with a real commitment to learner success.

    Essential

    * A Level 3 qualification or above in a relevant Public Services discipline (e.g. Uniformed Protective Services, Policing, Military, Emergency Services, Criminology or similar)

    * A teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE/CertEd/DET) or genuine commitment to achieving one within an agreed timeframe

    * Experience of teaching, training or supporting learners in an FE, sixth form, training provider or similar educational setting

    * Experience working with 16-19 learners and/or adults, including behaviour management and pastoral support

    * Experience planning and delivering structured learning sessions aligned to qualification specifications

    * Understanding of the Public Services sector, including roles, values, behaviours and progression routes

    * Knowledge of inclusive teaching strategies and differentiation to support mixed-ability groups

    * Understanding of safeguarding, Prevent, equality, diversity and British Values in an FE context

    * English and Maths at Level 2 or above (or equivalent)

    * Commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion and safeguarding

    Even Better If You Have...

    * A Level 4/5 or higher qualification in Public Services or a closely related subject

    * Recent experience teaching Public Services qualifications at Level 1-3 (e.g. BTEC, NCFE or similar)

    * Occupational experience within the Uniformed Protective Services (e.g. Armed Forces, Police, Fire, Ambulance, Security or Prison Service)

    * An assessor or IQA qualification, or willingness to work towards one

    * Experience contributing to enrichment, employer engagement or careers and employability activity

    * Experience supporting learners with additional needs, SEND or barriers to learning

    Potential Interview Dates
    Week commencing 22nd June 2026.
