How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

Are you a sports professional who loves seeing people grow? Do you want a role where your industry knowledge directly shapes the next generation of coaches, fitness leaders and sport practitioners? If so, we think you’ll feel right at home here.

As our new Sports Lecturer, you will bring the world of sport to life in the classroom and far beyond it. Based at our vibrant Colindale campus, you’ll deliver engaging, practical and theory-based teaching across sport-related programmes at Levels 1–3, helping learners build the skills, confidence and qualifications they need to thrive.

Beyond the classroom, you’ll be connecting learners to real industry pathways, through employer partnerships, academy links, competitions and enrichment activities, and you’ll have real influence in shaping the curriculum you teach. Whether you’re coaching on the gym floor, facilitating a performance analysis session or helping a learner navigate their next step into employment or higher education, every day brings something different.

    About Barnet and Southgate College
We change lives, empower individuals and connect communities.

We are an ambitious, forward-thinking further education college in North London, proud to serve diverse communities across Barnet, Southgate and beyond. Our Sport and Service Industries department is one of our fastest-growing areas, built on strong employer partnerships, excellent facilities and a genuine commitment to learner success. You’ll be joining a team that values your professional expertise, encourages your ideas and gives you the freedom to make a real impact.

    What You’ll Be Doing

No two days look the same, but here’s a flavour of what you’ll be getting involved in:

    * Inspiring teaching: Deliver high-quality, inclusive sessions across sport-related programmes, from sports science theory to practical gym and coaching work.

    * Learner success: Track progress, support achievement and help learners take their next step with confidence.

    * Industry connections: Build links with employers, academies and leisure providers to bring real-world relevance to every lesson.

    * Curriculum shaping: Contribute your expertise to curriculum development, quality improvement and enrichment planning

    * Assessment & compliance: Manage assessment and internal quality assurance processes to awarding body standards, including tracking learner evidence and preparing for external verification.

    * Enrichment & events: Get involved in competitions, open days and other activities that bring the curriculum to life.

    * Pastoral support: Act as a tutor and mentor, helping learners navigate challenges and supporting their wellbeing alongside their academic progress.

    Essential

    * A degree or equivalent professional qualification in Sport, Sports Science, Fitness or a closely related field

    * A teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE/CertEd/DET) or genuine commitment to achieving one

    * Relevant vocational sport or fitness qualifications (e.g. Gym Instructor, Sports Coaching or equivalent)

    * Recent industry experience in sport, fitness, coaching or leisure environments

    * Experience delivering sport qualifications at Level 1–3 (e.g. BTEC, NCFE, OCR, Sports Leaders)

    * Strong knowledge of sport, fitness, health and exercise science, with practical coaching skills

    * A confident, positive approach to behaviour management in both classroom and practical settings

    * English and Maths at Level 2 or above (or equivalent)

    * Commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion and safeguarding

    Even Better If You Have…

    * Experience teaching, training or assessing in an FE, HE or training provider setting

    * An assessor or IQA qualification (or willingness to work towards one)

    * Experience developing curriculum, creating resources or leading a course area

    * Links to sports clubs, leisure centres, academies or uniformed services pathways

    * Experience supporting learners into employment, apprenticeships, higher education or elite sport
