How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

Night Veterinary Surgeon – Advanced Hospital Practice – Batley, West Yorkshire

We’re proud to be working with a large, highly regarded veterinary hospital that is looking to strengthen its dedicated night team with an experienced Out of Hours Veterinary Surgeon. This is a superb opportunity to join a forward-thinking, high-standard practice with excellent facilities, a collaborative culture and one of the most comprehensive clinical teams in the region.

The practice is seeking a confident vet who enjoys emergency and critical care work and thrives in a well-supported hospital environment. With strong nursing support, excellent equipment and access to certificate holders across multiple disciplines, this role offers the chance to work up complex cases to a high standard.

    The Role

7 nights on / 14 nights off rota
Average 27 hours per week contract
    Dedicated OOH and ECC caseload

    30-minute emergency consultations as standard
Emergency surgeries performed overnight as required
Focused ECC work while the day team manages routine and chronic care

You will be supported by a dedicated night team, including:

    Night Registered Veterinary Nurse
    Night Veterinary Care Assistant
    Receptionist until 10pm
    Twilight nurse until midnight
The role would particularly suit vets with an interest in ECC, emergency surgery or internal medicine, and candidates must be comfortable managing emergency cases independently.

    The Practice

This is a large, purpose-built veterinary hospital with an exceptional reputation for clinical standards, mentorship and professional development. The practice employs around 15 veterinary surgeons and more than 20 nurses, creating a highly collaborative environment with excellent support at all levels.

The leadership team is deeply invested in staff wellbeing, clinical excellence and professional growth, creating a supportive culture where vets are encouraged to develop their interests and contribute to clinical discussions.

The hospital also acts as a teaching and development centre, hosting veterinary students and supporting graduate programmes, and regularly pilots’ new technology and innovations within the wider veterinary group.

    Facilities include:

7 consultation rooms including a dedicated feline consult and end-of-life suite
4 operating theatres including a high-end dental suite
    Digital X-ray
    Advanced ultrasound with Doppler
Visiting CT scanner (soon to be permanent)
    Flexible gastroscope and bronchoscope
    Video otoscope and rigid endoscopy
    Laparoscopy equipment
    Dental radiography suite
Full in-house laboratory and transfusion medicine
Multiparameter monitoring including ECG, capnography and blood pressure
    Clinical Caseload

As a hospital-level practice and referral hub for multiple surrounding clinics, the emergency caseload is busy and varied.

Night vets regularly manage procedures such as:

    Caesarean sections
    Pyometra surgery
    Exploratory laparotomy
    Enterotomy and enterectomy
You will also manage complex medical emergencies including:

    Addisonian crises
    Diabetic ketoacidosis
    Severe pancreatitis
    Critical inpatient care
This role would suit a vet who enjoys hands-on ECC work and clinical problem solving.

    What They’re Looking For

    The ideal candidate will be:

A confident GP or ECC-focused vet
    Comfortable managing emergency cases independently
Strong communicator with excellent clinical judgement
Team-focused and keen to engage in clinical discussions
UK experienced and confident with inpatient care
This is a practice that values collaboration, clinical discussion and evidence-based medicine, with a strong culture of mentorship and knowledge sharing.

    Progression & Development

    Strong in-house CPD culture
Support from certificate holders in surgery, medicine, dentistry and ECC
Active clinical forums and case discussions
    Certificate study encouraged and supported
    Opportunities to develop clinical interests
The practice is known for its commitment to learning, mentorship and professional development across the whole team.

    Why This Opportunity Stands Out

Large hospital environment with excellent facilities
Strong ECC caseload with varied and interesting cases
Outstanding nursing and team support overnight
    Collaborative, non-hierarchical culture
Forward-thinking leadership team invested in staff development
    Purpose-built facilities and advanced equipment
Healthy rota offering two weeks off after every working block
