General description:
The R&D Scientist I supports the development of new products and contributes to the expansion of Hygiena’s technology portfolio. Working under the guidance of the R&D Manager, the role involves conducting laboratory-based research, analysing data, and supporting product development activities within a microbiology-focused environment.
Responsibilities:
- Designs and conducts research and development experiments to address defined objectives, under the direction of the R&D Manager, in line with company policies and product specifications
- Performs standard microbiological techniques, including media preparation, Gram staining, aseptic technique, dilutions and culturing, in accordance with established protocols
- Undertakes customer product testing and supports the development of bespoke protocols in line with R&D and product-specific procedures.
- Analyses, interprets and presents experimental data, with the ability to identify trends and propose appropriate next steps
- Supports the day-to-day operation of the R&D laboratory, including ordering materials, maintaining laboratory cleanliness, and ensuring the safe handling and disposal of laboratory waste in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.
- Contributes to idea generation for new products and product improvements, and participates in internal scientific meetings and external events as required
- Ensures compliance with all organisational systems, training, policies and procedures, and adheres to relevant legal and regulatory requirements, seeking guidance where appropriate
- Actively supports and participates in the safety program, both for self-protection and the protection of other employees, by reading and abiding by all requirements in the Safety Manual and Injury Illness Prevention Program (IIPP).
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology or a related field required. Master’s Degree in Microbiological discipline preferred.
- Up to three (3) years of experience in a laboratory setting with knowledge in: Microbial identification, Basic enzymology, Moles, Health and Safety
- Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat required.
- Basic knowledge of statistical methodologies.
- Basic understanding of Bioluminescence.
- Basic understanding of our customers and market.
- Some knowledge of Health & Safety, COSHH, REACH.
- Contributes to a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and scientific excellence within the R&D team.
