Where you will workSURF is the ICT cooperative for Dutch educational and research institutions. Together with them, we work on digital services and complex innovation challenges to enhance the quality of education and research.
The team you will joinYou will be working in the Campus Development team, part of the Network department. We provide reliable and innovative network infrastructure for education and research, managing services such as eduroam, iotroam, SURFwireless, SURFfirewall, and working on Smart Campus, open Wi‑Fi, and private 6G.
What you will doAs a Network Security Expert, you will manage and further develop the SURFfirewall service for education and research institutions. You will move between operational, tactical, and strategic issues, collaborate with product managers, technical colleagues, vendors, and institutions to deliver a reliable and future‑proof service. You will ensure the service meets member needs and play a key role in its further development, including configuration support, campus filtering, and innovative applications such as automated threat detection.
Other responsibilities include:
- Oversee operational management of the SURFfirewall service, monitor quality, and assist institutions in connecting.
- Initiate and implement service improvements with product managers, vendors, and colleagues.
- Research, design, and test new network security solutions and translate innovations into practical services.
- Contribute to strategic development of network security within campus connectivity.
- Collaborate with national and international partners on new technologies and standards.
- Share knowledge with colleagues and community through presentations, workshops, blogs, and other activities.
You are technically skilled, take ownership, and enjoy developing complex service offerings. You translate technical challenges into practical solutions, navigate stakeholder interactions, collaborate closely, and share knowledge.
- Completed associate’s or bachelor’s degree in IT or Telecommunications (or similar).
- At least 5 years of experience in a similar role, including project‑based work and vendor management.
- Knowledge of modern network security, internet protocols, and networks.
- Experience with Fortinet solutions (FortiGate, FortiManager, FortiAnalyzer); experience with other firewall platforms such as Juniper is a plus.
- Proactive, analytical, results‑oriented work ethic.
- Excellent communication skills and strong command of Dutch and English.
