TenneT plays a crucial role in connecting offshore wind farms to the onshore high-voltage grid, supporting the government’s vision of a rapid transition to sustainable energy. We are dedicated to developing, building, and managing grid connections from offshore wind farms to the onshore transmission grid. Grid Service Offshore is responsible for these connections.
In 2020, the first two Dutch offshore substations, Borssele Alpha and Beta, became operational. We currently have six offshore substations of 700 MW AC in operation, with more to come. Operating Engineer (Offshore Telecom & CCTV Systems) NL (M/F/D – Arnhem)
Your role:

The Operating Engineer is responsible for supporting the operation of the new 700MW offshore converter stations by managing all preventive and corrective maintenance measures, handling warranty management with the contractor, resolving operational issues, and executing improvement projects for electrical, automation, cable, and related systems. As an Operating Engineer, you are also heavily involved in operational and organizational readiness for taking over new project assets, ensuring all operational requirements are met.
You have the ability to work independently, addressing both systemic and incidental issues, and can lead small projects. For larger projects, you may serve as a Senior User, ensuring the project achieves its intended benefits.
Tasks and responsibilities include:
• Establishing the technical direction for operations and maintenance.
• Participating in the Grid Connection System (GCS) management steering team, sharing responsibility for the custodianship of the GCS in terms of availability, budget, risk, and quality.
• Managing a portfolio of small projects, prioritizing work based on risk and financial considerations.
• Identifying defects and non-compliances in project design and managing them through the warranty process with key vendors.
• Leading design efforts and overseeing project execution.
• Monitoring routine activities and resolving faults through coordination and technical support.
• Managing and prioritizing the preparation, execution, and administrative completion of maintenance activities for platform and cable systems.
• Ensuring business requirements are met on larger projects.
• Providing technical input and lessons learned to ensure future safe and efficient operations and maintenance of assets.
• Assisting projects and Operations Readiness Teams in specifying user requirements for new assets.
• Ensuring operational requirements are integrated into maintenance engineering asset and organizational planning.
• Developing efficient and effective Maintenance Plans, including Job Cards and Work Orders.
• Being accountable for the budget related to cyclic maintenance, repair replacement, and investment measures.
• Managing and evaluating service contracts with key vendors, including handling tender documents, bid evaluations, negotiations, and ensuring effective contract delivery.
Candidate profile:
• Hold a BSc or MSc degree in Engineering.
• Have at least 5+ years of relevant work experience with offshore platforms or in a related field.
• Possess experience with various network and Telecom systems (IPv4, CCNA, Computer Science, firewalls, fiber optics, CAT cabling), and understand different control interfaces (IP Service Networks, LAN, VoIP Telephone Systems, CCTV servers, Public Address and General Alarm (PAGA) systems).
• Be familiar with operational environments and experienced in using maintenance management systems like SAP, Maximo, or Ultimo (SAP experience is preferred).
• Be willing to work weekends, have no 9-to-5 mentality, and be open to occasional offshore travel (a couple of times a year). Willingness to work two days a week in the office is essential.
• Have relevant knowledge and experience working on maintenance projects and understand the dynamics between different systems.
• Be an established and recognized technical leader, capable of effectively working in multicultural teams (both onshore and offshore).
• Knowledge of offshore regulatory conditions and legislation (DNV, PED, SODM, NEN) is necessary.
• Have a natural ability to share knowledge and experience to improve processes and assets.
• Be a team player, supporting the Grid Connection Manager with scope of work, quality assurance, risk assessments, and interfacing with all levels and departments.
• Have experience in operational readiness programs for new assets.
• Be solution-oriented in unexpected fault management situations to ensure asset components are back up and running.
• Be able to act as a discipline lead on multiple simultaneous projects, managing design efforts and project execution.
• Proficient in diagnosing and fixing issues with telecommunications networks.
• Manage and evaluate service contracts with key vendors, including tender documents, bid evaluations, and ensuring effective contract delivery.
• Understand the importance of asset data and documentation, ensuring maintenance information is recorded correctly for safe and efficient operations.
• Remain calm and collected, possess excellent interpersonal communication skills, be a self-starter, highly disciplined, and a strong team player who is solution-oriented.
• Have strong planning, organizing, coordinating, and reporting skills for maintenance and repair work across various disciplines.
• Proficiency in English (spoken and written) is required, and Dutch is an advantage.
• Have relevant knowledge and experience in occupational safety and environmental protection.
• A valid driver’s license is required.
Strong cooperation and communication skills are essential. An offshore medical examination and required training (GWO, etc.) must be completed with positive outcomes regularly.
